Side Effects
ORANOL Propranolol 10mg common side effects include: fatigue, dizziness, cold extremities, and gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea or diarrhea. Less frequently, it may cause sleep disturbances, bradycardia (slow heart rate), or bronchospasm in susceptible individuals. Directions and Dosage
- Adults Hypertension/Angina: Initially 40mg twice daily (4 tablets), increased gradually to 120-240mg daily. Maximum: 320mg daily.
- Adults Arrhythmias: 10-40mg 3-4 times daily. Maximum: 160mg daily.
- Adults Migraine Prevention: 20-40mg 2-3 times daily. Maximum: 160mg daily.
- Children 3-18 years (Arrhythmias): 0.5-1mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Maximum: 5mg/kg daily.
Not recommended for children under 3 years. Dosage adjustments may be needed for hepatic impairment. Take before meals and at bedtime for consistent effect.
Contraindications
Avoid with asthma, severe COPD, sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than 1st degree, cardiogenic shock, or decompensated heart failure. Contraindicated in metabolic acidosis, severe peripheral arterial disorders, and untreated pheochromocytoma.
Special Precautions
- Monitor blood glucose in diabetics as it may mask hypoglycemia symptoms
- Gradual withdrawal over 2 weeks to avoid rebound hypertension
- Use cautiously in patients with thyroid disorders or history of depression
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
May potentiate hypotensive effects with calcium channel blockers. Avoid concurrent use with verapamil/diltiazem due to heart block risk. Alters insulin/antidiabetic requirements - monitor blood glucose closely.
