Indications/Uses
Sodium phosphate is prescribed to treat constipation and to clean the intestines before surgery, endoscopy or other intestinal procedures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
- Use sodium phosphate exactly as instructed by your doctor for it to be effective.
- If you are given the solution for enema, lie down on your left side with your knees bent. Remove the cap from the applicator tip; insert the tip gently into your rectum and squeeze the bottle slowly to empty the contents into your rectum. Stay lying down up to 15 minutes, until you feel the urge to move your bowel.
- If you are given the oral solution, take it at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Dilute in a full glass of cold water and drink all of the liquid immediately, followed by a full glass of water.
- Do not use more than one dose of this medicine within 24 hours.
- If you forget to use this medicine on schedule, call your doctor for instructions.
- Unless advised by your doctor, do not double or adjust dosage or use longer than prescribed.
Contraindications and Special Precautions
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist:
- if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- if you have any of the following conditions: allergy, intestinal or bowel obstruction, kidney problem, heart problem, dehydration, fluid or electrolyte imbalance, low blood volume, low-salt diet;
- if you are using any other prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and dietary or herbal supplements.
- Do not use this medicine within 2 hours before or after taking other medicines unless advised by your doctor.
- Do not use any other laxatives or enemas while using this medicine.
- Drink plenty of liquids while using this medicine.
- Keep a regular check-up schedule. Your doctor may prescribe tests to check and monitor your progress while under treatment with this medicine.
- If you need to undergo surgery or dental procedure, inform your doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine before going through it.
- Side effects may possibly occur as with most medicines. You may not experience any side effect; however, if you experience any of these side effects with sodium phosphate, inform your doctor immediately, especially if they become severe or persistent: anal irritation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps or pain, blood in the stool, decreased urination, irregular heartbeat, rectal bleeding and allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
- The side effects mentioned here are not complete and others may occur. If you observe other side effects or reactions, call your doctor for advice.
- Do not share your medicine with others even if you have the same disease symptoms.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the medicine out of children's reach. Discard it properly when it is expired or no longer needed.
