Indications / Uses

Guaifenesin is used to help loosen mucus in the airways. It is often used to relieve chest congestion associated with coughs caused by colds, the flu, or other respiratory infections. Guaifenesin can make coughs more productive by thinning and loosening mucus. It is important to use this medication as directed.

Side-effects

Guaifenesin common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Dizziness and headache are also possible, though less common. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

Dosage / Direction

The usual dosage of Guaifenesin:
Adult: 200 to 400 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 2.4 g/day
Sustained release formulation: 600 to 1200 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 2.4 g/day

Pediatric Dose:
Immediate release formulation:
less than 2 years: 12 mg/kg/day orally in 6 divided doses
2 to 5 years: 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 600 mg/day
6 to 11 years: 100 to 200 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 1.2 g/day
12 years or older: 200 to 400 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 2.4 g/day
Sustained release formulation:
2 to 5 years: 300 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 600 mg/day
6 to 11 years: 600 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 1.2 g/day
12 years or older: 600 to 1200 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 2.4 g/day

Contraindications

Guaifenesin should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to guaifenesin or any of the other ingredients in the capsule. It is generally not recommended for children under a certain age (check product labeling).

Special Precautions

If your cough worsens, persists for more than 7 days, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, discontinue use and seek guidance. It is important to stay hydrated while taking guaifenesin.

While guaifenesin is generally considered safe, interactions may occur with certain medications. It is always wise to be aware of potential drug interactions.
