Side Effects

Directions and Dosage

  • Adults (18+ years): Initial dose: 2 capsules (4mg), then 1 capsule (2mg) after each loose stool. Maximum: 8 capsules (16mg) in 24 hours.
  • Children 9-11 years (30+ kg): 1 capsule (2mg) up to 3 times daily.
  • Children 6-8 years (20-29 kg): 1 capsule (2mg) up to twice daily.

Not recommended for children under 6 years. Maximum treatment duration: 2 days for acute diarrhea unless directed otherwise.

Contraindications

Do not use with bloody stools, high fever, or abdominal distension. Avoid in cases of intestinal obstruction, ulcerative colitis, or bacterial enterocolitis. Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to loperamide.

Special Precautions

  • Discontinue if abdominal bloating develops
  • Use cautiously in liver impairment
  • Monitor for fluid/electrolyte imbalance

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

May interact with quinidine, ritonavir, and certain antibiotics. Avoid concurrent use with other constipating agents. Always disclose current medications before starting treatment.
