Indications/Uses
Acute and chronic liver disease eg, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, hepatitis, associated with hyperammonemia; especially for the treatment of neurological complications (hepatic encephalopathy).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Granules: Unless prescribed otherwise, take 1-2 sachets of Hepa-Merz up to 3 times daily. Dissolve the contents of the sachet in plenty of liquid (eg, glass of water, tea or juice), and drink after meals. If required, the dosage may be increased without risk.
Infusion: Usually up to 4 ampule daily.
Associated with Incipient disturbance of consciousness (pre-coma): Up to 8 ampule/24 hr, depending on the severity of the condition. Maximum Infusion Rate: 5 g/hr.
Associated with venous tolerance: Should not exceed 6 ampule/500 mL infusion.

Contraindications
Severe renal dysfunction (renal insufficiency). A serum creatinine level exceeding 3 mg/100 mL can be regarded as a reference value.
Adverse Reactions
Transient GI complaints, nausea, vomiting.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
Action
L-ornithine-L-aspartate stimulates ammonia detoxification by enhancing urea synthesis in the urea cycle. Additionally, it eliminates extrahepatic ammonia from the tissues.
