Action
Pharmacotherapeutic group: Eye vitamin and mineral supplement.
Pharmacology: Ocuvite PreserVision is composed of vitamins and minerals necessary for the normal metabolic functioning of the body. Included in this formulation are the antioxidant vitamins-vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A and the minerals zinc and copper needed for the functioning of antioxidant enzymes. Antioxidants are beneficial to health and protect from damage caused by free radicals produced by oxidation. This metabolic process occurs continuously throughout the body and in the eyes as well.
Free radicals are believed to be involved in a wide variety of pathological processes; they have been hypothesized to play a role in the causation of numerous diseases. Recent research suggests that anti-oxidants may be capable of preventing certain types of cancer, heart disease, neurological disease, and cataracts which are seen more often in the elderly. Therefore, the use of a vitamin dietary supplement is medically advisable in a variety of circumstances where vitamin deficiencies are likely to occur, i.e, inadequate intake, malabsorption, increased tissue needs or metabolic dysfunction.
