Drug Interactions
A number of drugs are known to lower vitamin C levels, requiring an increase in its intake. Estrogen-containing contraceptives (birth control pills) are known to lower vitamin C levels in plasma and white blood cells. Aspirin can lower vitamin C levels if taken frequently ie, 2 aspirin tablets taken every 6 hrs for a week has been reported to lower white blood cell vitamin C by 50%, primarily by increasing urinary excretion of vitamin C.

Action
Zinc is an essential trace element for humans. It is a constituent of over 200 metallo-enzymes. It is found in many tissues including pancreas, liver, kidneys, lungs, muscles, bones, eyes and endocrine glands. Zinc is a mineral that helps support the proper growth and development of children. It has various roles in the human system, and participated in systemic and intracellular control and integration, and in mechanisms of the major metabolic pathways involving tissue and protein synthesis, gene expression and embryogenesis and apoptosis. Zinc is thus essential for growth, sexual maturation, sensory, cognitive and immune function.
Studies showed that zinc supplementation enhances growth of children and reduces the prevalence of common childhood infections eg, diarrhea and pneumonia. Zinc supplementation has been associated with improved motor development in low birth weight infants and was associated with better neuropsychologic functioning.
PedZinc Plus C contains 150% RENI* of vitamin C and 100% RENI of zinc for ages 13-15 years (the 13- to 15-year old group was used to maximize the vitamin C and zinc contents of PedZinc Plus C).
