Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of reversible bronchoconstriction due to bronchial asthma & COPD including chronic bronchitis & emphysema. Prophylaxis of exercise- & allergen-induced asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr Relief of attacks 1-2 inhalations daily. Max: 8 inhalations/day. Prevention of allergen- or exercise-induced symptoms 2 inhalations 10-15 min before exertion. Childn <12 yr Relief of attacks 1 inhalation as required. Max: 8 inhalations daily. Prevention of allergen- or exercise-induced symptoms 1 or 2 inhalations 10-15 min before exertion.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pre-term labor. Concomitant use w/ nonselective β-blockers.
Special Precautions
Serious cardiac disorders eg, recent MI, CHD, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy & tachyarrhythmia; severe & untreated HTN; aneurysm; pheochromocytoma; uncontrolled diabetes & hyperthyroidism; untreated hypokalemia. Hypokalemia potentiated w/ concomitant use of xanthine derivatives, steroids or diuretics & in hypoxia. Monitor K or blood glucose levels in patients at risk. Discontinue use if paradoxical bronchospasm occurs. Labor & delivery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Asthma, back pain, increased cough & infection (resp); chest pain, diarrhea, glossitis, accidental injury (nervous system), anxiety, dyspnea, ear disorder, ear pain & UTI; tremor, nervousness & headache.
Drug Interactions
Other sympathomimetic bronchodilators. Risk of severe bronchospasm w/ β-blockers. ECG changes &/or hypokalemia may be worsened w/ non-K-sparing diuretics (loop or thiazide). Decreased serum levels of digoxin. CV effects may be potentiated w/ MAOIs or TCAs.
