Indications / Uses

FEBUNORM Febuxostat 40mg is used for the chronic management of hyperuricemia, a condition characterized by high levels of uric acid in the blood. This accumulation often leads to urate crystal deposition, which is the underlying cause of gout. The medication is recommended for adults when urate deposition has already occurred, including a history of gouty arthritis or the presence of tophi. By selectively inhibiting xanthine oxidase, it effectively decreases the production of uric acid, thereby maintaining serum uric acid levels below 6 mg/dL.

Side Effects

FEBUNORM Febuxostat 40mg common side effects include: abnormalities in liver function tests, diarrhea, headaches, and nausea. Patients may also experience skin rashes or temporary flare-ups of the underlying condition when first starting treatment. These flares are common as uric acid levels change rapidly. Rarely, more serious effects can involve severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening rashes or swelling, and cardiovascular events.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): The recommended starting dose is 40 mg once daily.
• If the serum uric acid level is not below 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily.
• The maximum daily dosage is 80 mg for chronic management.

Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old. The therapeutic goal is to maintain the serum uric acid level below 6 mg/dL for long-term treatment.

Contraindications

Do not use if there is a known sensitivity to the compound. Treatment is not recommended for patients currently taking purine antagonists such as mercaptopurine or azathioprine, as this combination may lead to potentially toxic drug levels.

Special Precautions

• Treatment should not be initiated during an acute episode of the underlying condition.
• Close monitoring of liver function is necessary, particularly before starting and during the course of therapy.
• Use is not recommended for individuals with existing ischemic heart disease or congestive heart failure.
• Patients should be monitored for signs of serious allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, including severe skin peeling and fever.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concurrent administration with certain other drugs, particularly mercaptopurine, azathioprine, and theophylline, is contraindicated or requires caution. These combinations can lead to dangerously increased plasma concentrations of the interacting drugs, raising the risk of toxicity.

How should I store it?

Store in a dry place at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep the tablets in their original packaging to protect them from both heat and light.
