HARFURIN Nitrofurantoin 100mg is used for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated infections within the lower urinary tract, such as the bladder, that are caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It works as an antibacterial agent, concentrating its activity specifically in the urine to eliminate the pathogens responsible for the infection. This preparation may also be used for long-term prophylactic management to prevent the recurrence of urinary tract infections in susceptible individuals. The effectiveness depends on the sensitivity of the bacteria to this medication.

Side Effects

HARFURIN Nitrofurantoin 100mg common side effects include: frequent gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and a loss of appetite, which are often reduced when the capsule is taken with food. Users may notice their urine changing to a dark yellow or brown color, which is harmless and temporary. Less frequently, but of concern, are signs of nerve damage (tingling or numbness in the extremities), dizziness, headache, and rare reactions affecting the lungs or liver.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years - Acute Treatment): 50 mg to 100 mg, taken 4 times per day.
• Dosage for Adults (Long-Term Suppression): 50 mg to 100 mg, taken once per day.

Contraindicated in infants under 1 month of age. Do not exceed a maximum daily dosage of 400 mg (4 capsules) for the acute treatment phase. Acute treatment duration is typically 7 days.

Contraindications

This medication should not be used by individuals with a known severe sensitivity to the compound. It is contraindicated in cases of severe kidney impairment or a history of previous lung or liver injury related to its use. The compound is also unsuitable for very young infants or for women in the final stages of pregnancy.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The compound is strictly contraindicated during the final term of pregnancy (near delivery) due to the risk of a blood disorder in the newborn. It may enter mother's milk and should be avoided if the infant has a known enzyme deficiency that affects red blood cells.

Special Precautions

• Discontinue use immediately if any signs of nerve damage, such as numbness or persistent tingling in the limbs, begin to appear.
• Use with caution in individuals with pre-existing conditions like severe anemia, diabetes, or vitamin deficiencies, as these increase the risk of adverse effects.
• Long-term use requires periodic monitoring due to the potential for lung or liver complications.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Certain preparations used to manage stomach acid that contain magnesium may reduce the absorption and effectiveness of this antibacterial agent. Other compounds used to reduce blood uric acid may decrease the excretion of this product, potentially increasing its side effects.
