Indications / Uses

ALKALINSE Potassium Citrate is used for the management of various kidney stone conditions, including hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis and uric acid lithiasis. This medication works by increasing the alkalinity of the urine, which helps prevent the formation of new kidney stones and can also aid in dissolving existing ones. It is also prescribed for treating metabolic problems such as renal tubular acidosis, where there is a high acid level in the body. The resulting changes in urine composition make it less favorable for the crystallization of stone-forming salts.

Side Effects

ALKALINSE Potassium Citrate common side effects include: minor gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, abdominal discomfort, and loose bowel movements or diarrhea. A more serious, but less frequent, concern is the potential for high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), which can manifest as muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat. Users should also be vigilant for signs of gastrointestinal lesions or bleeding, which could involve severe abdominal pain or black, tar-like stools.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): Initial amount is 15 to 30 mEq taken 2 times a day, or 10 to 20 mEq taken 3 times a day.
• Maximum Daily Dosage: Do not exceed a total amount of 100 mEq in 24 hours.

Not recommended for children under 18 years of age. Treatment duration for stone management may be long-term to prevent recurrence.

Contraindications

Avoid intake if high levels of the main mineral component are already present in the blood, or if there are conditions that increase this risk, such as chronic impairment of kidney function, severe loss of body fluids, or an uncontrolled metabolic disorder. It is also unsuitable for those with an active internal infection or certain gastrointestinal issues, including ulcers or blockages.

Special Precautions

• Regular monitoring of blood mineral levels is recommended, especially in those with reduced kidney function or heart damage, due to the risk of high mineral content in the blood.
• Discontinue use immediately if there is severe vomiting, intense abdominal discomfort, or any evidence of internal bleeding.
• Caution is advised for individuals with a history of gastrointestinal tract issues due to the small risk of lesions or obstruction.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This preparation should not be taken alongside agents that spare the primary mineral component in the body, such as certain water-regulating tablets, as this significantly increases the risk of excessively high blood mineral levels. Using it with some heart and diabetes medications requires caution due to potential enhanced effects or altered heart rhythm.
