Indications/Uses
Used in conditions where inhibition of gastric acid secretion may be beneficial, including aspiration syndromes, dyspepsia, GERD, PUD & Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dyspepsia 20 mg daily for 2-4 wk. GERD 20 mg once daily for 4 wk followed by a further 4-8 wk if not fully healed. Refractory esophagitis 40 mg daily. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. Childn 0.7-1.4 mg/kg daily for 4-12 wk. Max: 40 mg. PUD 20 mg single dose or 40 mg in severe cases for 4 wk (duodenal ulcer) & 8 wk (gastric ulcer). Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. NSAID-associated ulceration 20 mg daily. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome 60 mg once daily. Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during general anesth 40 mg evening pre-op & 40 mg 2-6 hr pre-op.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before a meal.
Contraindications
Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Consider possibility of malignancy in patients w/ gastric ulcer. Hepatic impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, diarrhea & skin rashes. Pruritus, dizziness, fatigue, constipation, nausea & vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, arthralgia & myalgia, urticaria & dry mouth.
Drug Interactions
Diazepam, phenytoin & warfarin. Ketoconazole & itraconazole.
