Omeprazole contains the active ingredient Omeprazole. It is part of a group of medicines known as 'Proton Pump Inhibitors.' These medications help by lowering the amount of acid your stomach makes.

Omeprazole is used to treat various conditions in both adults and children:

Adults:

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GORD), where stomach acid irritates the esophagus.
Duodenal and gastric ulcers.
Ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori, often treated with antibiotics alongside omeprazole.
NSAID-induced ulcers or to prevent their formation.
Excess stomach acid due to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Children (over 1 year old and ≥10 kg):

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), with symptoms like regurgitation, vomiting, and poor weight gain.
Ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori, treated with omeprazole and antibiotics.

What are the side-effects of ML-GACID Omeprazole 20mg Capsule?

Omeprazole can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. If you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help:

Severe allergic reaction: Sudden wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, rash, fainting, or difficulty swallowing.
Skin issues: Reddening with blisters or peeling, and severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals, which may indicate Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin, dark urine, and fatigue.

In very rare cases, omeprazole may affect white blood cells, potentially leading to immune deficiency.

If you develop an infection with symptoms like fever and a severely reduced general condition, or localized symptoms such as pain in the neck, throat, mouth, or difficulties urinating, consult your doctor immediately. A blood test can determine if you have agranulocytosis, a condition involving a lack of white blood cells. Be sure to inform your doctor about all your medications at this time.

Dosage / Direction for Use of ML-GACID Omeprazole 20mg Capsule

For Adults:

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GORD):
- If the food pipe (gullet) is damaged:
  - Start with 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. If not healed, your doctor may increase to 40 mg daily for an additional 8 weeks.
  - Once healed, continue with 10 mg once daily.
- If the gullet is not damaged:
  - Take 10 mg once daily.
Duodenal Ulcers:
- Take 20 mg once daily for 2 weeks. If not healed, your doctor may extend this for another 2 weeks or increase the dose to 40 mg daily for 4 weeks.
Gastric Ulcers:
- Take 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If not healed, extend for another 4 weeks or increase to 40 mg daily for 8 weeks.
Preventing Ulcers:
- Take 10 mg or 20 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose to 40 mg if needed.
Ulcers caused by NSAIDs:
- Take 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.
Preventing Ulcers while on NSAIDs:
- Take 20 mg once daily.
Ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori:
- Take 20 mg twice daily for one week, along with two antibiotics prescribed by your doctor (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, or metronidazole).
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:
- Start with 60 mg daily. Your doctor will adjust the dose as needed and determine the duration of treatment.

For Children and Adolescents:

For treating GORD (heartburn and acid regurgitation):
- Children over 1 year old and weighing more than 10 kg may use Omeprazole.
- The dosage is determined based on the child's weight, and a doctor will prescribe the appropriate amount.
For treating ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori:
- Children over 4 years old may use Omeprazole.
- The dosage is based on the child's weight, with the correct amount prescribed by the doctor.
- Two antibiotics, amoxicillin and clarithromycin, will also be prescribed by the doctor.

Contraindications

Do not take Omeprazole if:

You are allergic to omeprazole or any other ingredients in this medicine.
You are allergic to other Proton Pump Inhibitors, such as Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole, Rabeprazole, or Esomeprazole.
You are taking a medicine containing Nelfinavir (used for HIV infection).

If any of these conditions apply to you, do not use Omeprazole. If you are unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

Special Precautions

Before taking Omeprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you experience:

Unexplained weight loss or swallowing issues.
Stomach pain, indigestion, or vomiting food/blood.
Black stools or severe, persistent diarrhea.
Severe liver problems or if you're scheduled for a Chromogranin A blood test.
Past skin reactions to similar acid-reducing medications.
