Indications/Uses
Timolol is prescribed to treat glaucoma (buildup of pressure in the eye causing damage to the optic nerve and eventual vision loss) and ocular hypertension (high pressure inside the eye).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Use timolol exactly as instructed by your doctor for it to be effective.
- Use timolol in the eyes only.
- Wash and dry your hands before and after applying this medicine.
- To apply, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye, look up and drop the prescribed dose into the pulled eyelid, taking care not to touch the eye with the tip of the bottle.
- Close your eye after application and apply light pressure with your finger to the inside corner of your eye near your nose for about 1 minute to prevent the medicine from draining out.
- Do not use more amounts or more often or use for a longer period than prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not touch or wash the dropper or let it touch your eyes or any other surface.
- Remove contact lenses before using this medicine and do not reinsert unless instructed by your doctor.
- Do not use any other eye medications during treatment with this medicine unless advised by your doctor.
- If you forget to use this medicine on schedule, use it immediately as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next dose, just proceed with your next regular dose schedule.
- Do not stop use unless advised by your doctor.
Contraindications and Special Precautions
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist:
- if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- if you have any of the following conditions: allergy, heart failure, heart problem (AV block), asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, thyroid problem, kidney problem, liver problem, neuromuscular disorder (myasthenia gravis), history of stroke, blood clot or circulation problem;
- if you are using any other prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and dietary or herbal supplements.
- Keep a regular check-up schedule. Your doctor may prescribe tests to check and monitor your progress while under treatment with this medicine.
- If you need to undergo surgery or dental procedure, inform your doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine before going through it.
- Side effects may possibly occur as with most medicines. You may not experience any side effect; however, if you experience any of these side effects with timolol, inform your doctor immediately, especially if they become severe or persistent: eye pain, itching, stinging, burning or redness; feeling that something is in the eye, blurred vision, double vision, vision changes, dry or watery eyes, increased sensitivity to light, crusting, oozing or drainage of the eye or eyelids, swelling or redness of the eyelids, drooping eyelid, nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, fainting, tiredness, depression, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations; problems with memory, speech or balance; sleeping problem, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, muscle weakness, ringing in the ears, skin rash, swelling, rapid weight gain, hair loss or thinning, shortness of breath even with mild exertion, cough, wheezing, stuffy nose, weak pulse, slow or irregular heartbeat, chest pain and allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
- If you experience dizziness, drowsiness or vision problems, do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activity which will need you to be alert or to see clearly.
- If your mouth gets dry while on timolol, drink water, chew sugar-free gum or suck on a hard candy.
- The side effects mentioned here are not complete and others may occur. If you observe other side effects or reactions, call your doctor for advice.
- Do not share your medicine with others even if you have the same disease symptoms.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the medicine out of children's reach. Discard it properly when it is expired or no longer needed.
