Indications/Uses

For short term use in cases of occasional constipation.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Unless otherwise directed, adults and children over 12 years of age, should take 1-2 sachets of Agiolax after evening meal. The individually correct dose is the lowest dose required to achieve a soft formed stool. Do not take more than 2 sachets in a day.
Administration: The granules should be swallowed whole with abundant amount of liquid i.e. ¼ liter. When taking other medications, to wait ½ to 1 hour before taking Agiolax.
Without medical advise, Agiolax should not be taken over a longer period (more than 2 weeks).

Overdosage

In the event of inadvertent or deliberate overdose, painful intestinal spasms and severe diarrhea with water and electrolyte losses as well as intense gastrointestinal complaints may occur. If the patient has taken an overdose, consult a doctor immediately. The doctor will decide whether any countermeasures (e.g. administration of liquids and electrolytes) are necessary.

Administration

Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ liqd (¼ L = 250 mL). Wait for 30 min-1 hr when taking other medications.

Contraindications

Agiolax must not be used in patients with abnormal stenosis in the gastrointestinal tract; ileus; Diabetes mellitus difficult to control; acute inflammatory intestinal diseases; e.g. Morbus Crohn; Colitis Ulcerosa; appendicitis; abdominal pain of unknown cause; severe dehydration with water and electrolyte losses; Children under 12 years of age.

Special Precautions

Use for longer periods may worsen any existing bowel sluggishness. The preparation should be used only if constipation cannot be remedied by change in diet or with the aid of bulking agents.
Note: Agiolax is taken by adult incontinent persons, prolonged contact of the skin with the faeces should be avoided by changing the sanitary towels.

Use In Pregnancy & Lactation

Agiolax should be used only if constipation cannot be remedied by change in diet or with the aid of bulking agents.
Note: Degradation products of senna pods with a laxative action such as rhein pass in small amounts into the maternal milk. No laxative effect on breast-fed babies was observed.

Adverse Reactions

Spasmodic gastro-intestinal complaints may occur very rarely. In these cases, the reduction of the dose is required.
In the course of treatment, a harmless red colouring of the urine may appear.
After a long-term use or higher doses (abuse), disorders of the water and electrolyte balance may occur. Incidents of diarrhea may produce in particular potassium loss. Potassium loss can cause disorder of cardiac function and myasthenia, in particular if cardiac glycosides (medicines increasing the strength of cardiac muscles), diuretics (agents promoting the excretion of urine) and cortisone and cortisone-like substances (adrenocortical steroids) are taken concurrently. In cases of chronic use, albumin or blood may be excreted in urine. Furthermore, staining of the intestinal mucosa (pseudomelanosis coli) may occur which, as a rule, is reversible after discontinuation of the preparation. Very seldom hypersensitivity reactions to Plantago ovata can occur.
Please inform the doctor or pharmacist about any adverse reactions the patient may observe which are not mentioned in this section.

Drug Interactions

In cases of chronic use/abuse, the loss of potassium can potentiate the effect of cardiac glycosides and influence the action of antiarrhythmics. Loss of potassium can be enhanced in combination with certain diuretics (agents promoting the excretion of urine), cortisone or cortisone-like substances (adrenocortical steroids) and liquorice roots.
The absorption of concurrently administered drugs from the gastro-intestinal tract into the blood stream can be delayed. A reduction of insulin dose can be required in insulin-dependent diabetics.
