Indications / Uses

SITAGARD-M Sitagliptin / Metformin 50 / 500 is used for managing high blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used in addition to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. The combination is prescribed when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with maximal tolerated amounts of Metformin alone, or for those already using Sitagliptin and Metformin as separate agents. It may also be used in triple combination therapy with a sulfonylurea or a thiazolidinedione.

Side Effects

SITAGARD-M Sitagliptin / Metformin 50 / 500 common side effects include: diarrhea, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence, and stomach discomfort. Other possible effects include headache, inflammation of the upper respiratory passages, sore throat, and joint or muscle pain. Although uncommon with this combination alone, signs of very low blood sugar may occur, especially when used with other blood sugar-lowering treatments. Serious but rare adverse effects like severe allergic reactions or an accumulation of a certain acid in the body (lactic acidosis) require immediate attention.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): The usual starting dosage is 1 tablet (50 mg Sitagliptin / 500 mg Metformin) twice daily.
• The daily dosage of the first component (Sitagliptin) should not exceed 100 mg.
• The daily dosage of the second component (Metformin) should not exceed 2000 mg.
• The dosage is personalized based on current treatment, effectiveness, and tolerance, and should be taken with meals to reduce stomach effects.

Not recommended for children under 18 years. Dosage adjustments are necessary for individuals with reduced kidney function. Treatment duration is ongoing for type 2 diabetes management.

Contraindications

This product should not be used in individuals who have a known sensitivity to the components. It is also contraindicated in patients with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including severe conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis. Do not use if there is severe kidney impairment or a condition that could acutely affect kidney function, such as severe infection or shock. Additionally, it is not for use in those with severe liver problems or a history of excessive alcohol consumption.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

This product should not be used during pregnancy or while providing nourishment for infants.

Special Precautions

• Before and periodically during use, kidney function should be assessed, as poor kidney health increases the potential for serious side effects.
• Stop using the product immediately if there is unexplained muscle pain, severe drowsiness, or fast, difficult breathing, as these may be signs of a serious, rare condition.
• Symptoms of severe, persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting could indicate a serious problem with the pancreas.
• Avoid excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks while using this product.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Caution is needed when combining this product with other blood sugar-lowering agents like sulfonylureas or insulin, as the amount of those medications may need to be lowered to reduce the risk of low blood sugar. Certain medications that affect kidney function, such as anti-inflammatory drugs or specific diuretics, can increase the chance of a serious side effect, and their use requires caution.
