Side Effects
SITAGARD-M Sitagliptin Metformin 50 / 1000 common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, and stomach ache. Other frequently reported effects are upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose, headache, and weakness. A serious but rare side effect associated with the metformin component is lactic acidosis, which requires immediate attention and can present with symptoms like unusual muscle pain, severe weakness, and trouble breathing. There is also a risk of inflammation of the pancreas and allergic reactions including rash, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults: The usual starting dose for those not currently treated with a combination is 50 mg of the first component and 500 mg of the second component, taken twice daily. The dose can be adjusted up to a maximum daily intake of 100 mg of the first component and 2000 mg of the second component.
- Maximum Daily Dosage: The total daily dose should not exceed 100 mg of the first component and 2000 mg of the second component.
This product is not generally recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes or children and adolescents under 18 years old.
Contraindications
This product should not be used by those who have had a severe allergic reaction to its components. It is also unsuitable for individuals with severe kidney problems or failure, and those with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis. Avoid use in cases of cardiovascular collapse, severe infections, or conditions that can cause decreased oxygen supply to tissues.
Special Precautions
- Requires careful use in individuals with moderate kidney impairment, with dose adjustments considered.
- May cause low vitamin B12 levels, especially with long-term use.
- Caution is advised in patients with heart issues.
- Stop treatment if a serious allergic reaction or a severe, persistent pain in the stomach area, which may signal inflammation of the pancreas, occurs.
- Should be temporarily discontinued before and after the use of iodinated contrast agents for imaging procedures.
- Limit intake of alcoholic beverages while taking this product.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
Taking this product with other medications used to manage blood sugar, such as insulin or certain secretagogues, may increase the likelihood of very low blood sugar. Dosage adjustment of these accompanying medications may be necessary. Certain drugs used for high blood pressure, fluid retention, or inflammation may also impact blood sugar control when taken with this product.
