Side Effects

RITEMED Metformin 850mg common side effects include: gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, which are most frequent when starting the regimen and often decrease over time with continued use. Some individuals may also notice a temporary metallic taste in the mouth. A potentially serious, though rare, side effect is a metabolic complication characterized by muscle cramps, weakness, and acidotic breathing, which requires immediate attention. Long-term administration can lead to a decrease in Vitamin B12 levels.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): Initial daily dosage is typically 850 mg (1 unit) once a day. Dosage increases should be made gradually, such as in increments of 850 mg every other week. The usual maintenance dosage is 850 mg twice a day. Do not exceed a total daily dosage of 2550 mg to 3000 mg in divided doses.
• Dosage for Adolescents (10–17 years): Dosing is typically started with a lower strength of 500 mg once daily. The maximum recommended dosage is 2000 mg daily in divided doses.

Not recommended for children under 10 years of age. Treatment duration is long-term for diabetes management.

Contraindications

The product should not be used in individuals with any form of severe metabolic acid imbalance, especially diabetic ketoacidosis or a history of a life-threatening acid complication. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment, or those with acute conditions that risk altering kidney function, such as severe infection or shock. Conditions like severe heart failure, respiratory failure, or liver dysfunction also prohibit its use.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Effective blood sugar control is important during pregnancy, but elevated levels are linked to increased risks for the fetus. The substance is passed into the mother's milk, although in small amounts; monitoring is advised when used by breastfeeding individuals.

Special Precautions

• Kidney function must be checked before starting therapy and monitored regularly during treatment, especially for elderly individuals.
• Consumption of alcoholic beverages must be avoided to minimize the risk of a serious and rare metabolic complication.
• The product should be temporarily discontinued before and after receiving any procedure involving the injection of iodine-containing contrast agents.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The concomitant use of this product with drugs that affect kidney function, such as some diuretics or anti-hypertensive agents, requires close supervision. Combining it with alcohol or certain anti-inflammatory drugs increases the risk of a serious metabolic complication. It can also enhance the effects of other sugar-lowering medications, increasing the risk of low blood sugar.
