PIOTAZ Pioglitazone 15mg is used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It functions by improving the body's sensitivity to its own insulin, which assists in controlling elevated blood sugar levels. This product can be utilized as a single treatment (monotherapy) or in combination with other oral treatments or insulin when adequate sugar control is not achieved through diet and exercise alone. Its use should be considered a second- or third-line treatment option.

Side Effects

PIOTAZ Pioglitazone 15mg common side effects include: headache, muscle pain, and symptoms typical of a common cold like a stuffy or sore throat. More concerning effects can include fluid retention and weight gain, which may be signs of heart failure, as well as an increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in women. Additionally, it may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used alongside other treatments.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): Treatment may begin at 15 mg or 30 mg once daily.
• The amount may be gradually increased up to a maximum daily dosage of 45 mg once daily.

Not recommended for use in children or adolescents under 18 years old. The total daily dosage must not exceed 45 mg.

Contraindications

Avoid use in individuals with a known sensitivity to the components or with diabetic ketoacidosis. It should not be used in those who have active or severe chronic heart failure (NYHA Class III or IV). Also, it is inappropriate for individuals with significant liver problems or those with active bladder cancer.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

This product may cause ovulation in women who normally do not ovulate, increasing the potential for unintended pregnancy. While control of the underlying condition is vital during pregnancy, caution is advised. Transfer into milk is possible, so use should be weighed against the potential for adverse effects in the infant.

Special Precautions

• Be alert for signs of fluid retention or heart failure, such as unusual shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or swelling.
• Use with caution in those with pre-existing heart problems.
• Liver function should be routinely assessed during treatment.
• Females should be aware of a potential increased risk of bone fractures.
• Individuals with a history of bladder cancer require extra caution.
• Any changes in vision should be reported immediately.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

When combined with insulin or other treatments, there is an increased potential for low blood sugar. The co-administration with insulin also increases the risk of fluid retention and related heart issues. Furthermore, some products can affect the levels of this medicine in the body, and the effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be diminished.

How should I store it?

Keep the tablets in their original packaging and store at a temperature that does not exceed 30°C. The product should be protected from exposure to both light and moisture to maintain its efficacy.
