Indications/Uses
Insulin isophane, an intermediate-acting insulin, is prescribed to treat diabetes requiring insulin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Use insulin isophane exactly as instructed by your doctor for it to be effective.
- Inject insulin isophane under your skin according to the times instructed by your doctor in relation to meals, into a different place in your injection skin area each time you use it. Your doctor will show you how to inject yourself with insulin isophane and give you instructions on how to change your injection site regularly.
- If you forget to use this medicine on schedule, check your blood sugar and call your doctor to ask if you should inject the missed dose.
- Unless advised by your doctor, you must not double or adjust dosage, or stop use even if you feel well.
Contraindications and Special Precautions
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist:
- if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- if you have any of the following conditions: allergy, kidney problem, liver problem, infection, emotional stress;
- if you are using any other prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and dietary or herbal supplements.
- Keep a regular check-up schedule. You need to test for blood sugar levels regularly and keep a record of your blood sugar levels. Your doctor will show you how to test; explain how to use the test results; advise you on the tests needed to check and monitor your progress while under treatment with this medicine. Your doctor will also advise you on the proper diet, exercise, weight control and care of eyes, foot, gums and teeth which you have to follow closely to help control your blood sugar levels.
- Too low blood sugar levels can cause hypoglycemia. The symptoms of hypoglycemia include nausea, headache, fast heartbeat, irritability, chills, unusual sweating, shaking, feeling hungry, vision changes, nervousness, confusion, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness and fainting. At the first sign of hypoglycemia, drink or eat something containing sugar like glucose tablet, sugar, honey, candy, orange juice or non-diet soda. If there is no improvement in your condition thereafter, seek immediate medical help.
- Inform your doctor when you are sick or under stress as the frequency and dose of your insulin isophane injection may have to be adjusted.
- In case of travel across time zones, check with your doctor on the timing of your injections.
- Avoid alcohol while using this medicine.
- If you need to undergo surgery or dental procedure, inform your doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine before going through it.
- Side effects may possibly occur as with most medicines. You may not experience any side effect; however, if you experience any of these side effects with insulin isophane, inform your doctor immediately, especially if they become severe or persistent: itching, redness or swelling at the injection site; nausea, headache, fast heartbeat, irritability, chills, unusual sweating, shaking, feeling hungry, vision changes, nervousness, confusion, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling of hands or feet, wheezing and allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
- If you experience drowsiness, dizziness or vision problems, do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activity which will need you to be alert or to see clearly.
- The side effects mentioned here are not complete and others may occur. If you observe other side effects or reactions, call your doctor for advice.
- Do not share your medicine with others even if you have the same disease symptoms.
Storage
- Store unopened insulin isophane in its carton in the refrigerator. Do not freeze and do not use frozen insulin isophane.
- Once opened, keep insulin isophane in the refrigerator or at room temperature in a cool dry place, protected from heat and moisture. Keep inside the carton to protect from light. Check with your pharmacist how long your particular brand may be used once opened.
- Keep this medicine out of childrens reach. Discard it properly when it is expired or no longer needed.
