Indications / Uses
GLUMET Metformin 500mg is used for the management of high blood sugar levels associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It is typically prescribed when diet modification and exercise alone are insufficient to maintain adequate blood sugar control. This medication works primarily by decreasing glucose production in the liver and increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. It can be used alone as monotherapy or in combination with other oral anti-diabetic agents or insulin for optimal management.

Contraindications
Avoid use in individuals with any type of severe metabolic acid imbalance, especially diabetic ketoacidosis or a history of lactic acidosis. It is not suitable for people with severe kidney impairment or those with acute conditions that can affect kidney function, such as severe infection or shock. Also, avoid use in cases of severe heart failure, respiratory failure, acute alcohol intoxication, or liver dysfunction.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Managing high blood sugar during pregnancy is critical, but uncontrolled levels are associated with increased risks of birth defects. The medication passes into the mother's milk, but the amount is low; caution is still advised.
Special Precautions
- Kidney function should be carefully monitored before starting the regimen and regularly throughout the duration of use.
- Excessive intake of alcoholic beverages should be avoided, as it significantly increases the risk of a serious metabolic complication.
- The product should be temporarily stopped before certain X-ray procedures involving the injection of dye.
- Periodic checks of Vitamin B12 levels are recommended, especially during long-term administration, to prevent nerve damage.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
Combining this product with certain anti-hypertensive drugs, diuretics, or anti-inflammatory agents requires close monitoring due to potential changes in blood sugar control or kidney function. The risk of metabolic acid imbalance is also increased when taken with alcohol. Caution is advised when used alongside other agents that lower blood sugar, as this increases the risk of low blood sugar.
How should I store it?
Store the product below 30°C in its original packaging, away from light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed to maintain its effectiveness.
