Indications/Uses
Type II DM (NIDDM) when dietary modification has failed in adequate glycemic control.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Starting dose: 1-2 mg once daily. Max: 2 mg. Patient more sensitive to hypoglycemic drugs Initially 1 mg once daily. Maintenance dose: 1-4 mg once daily. Max: 8 mg once daily. After reaching 2-mg dose, dosage increase should be made in increments not >2 mg at 1-2 wk intervals.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ breakfast or the 1st main meal of the day.
Contraindications
Diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Mild to moderate renal & hepatic impairment. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia, GI disturbances eg, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea & constipation.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs, other highly protein-bound drugs eg, salicylates, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, coumarin derivatives, probenecid, MAOIs, β-adrenergic blocking agents; thiazides & other diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, estrogens, OC, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics, thyroid hormones & INH.
