Indications / Uses
DIAMICRON MR Gliclazide 60mg is used for the management of high blood glucose levels in adults diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). This modified-release formulation works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to produce and release more insulin into the bloodstream. It is generally initiated when adequate glucose control cannot be achieved solely through changes in diet, exercise, and weight reduction. This medicine can be taken alone or as an addition to other treatments for the condition.

Side Effects
DIAMICRON MR Gliclazide 60mg common side effects include: Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can cause symptoms like headache, sweating, nervousness, and confusion, and is the most common reaction. Gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation may also occur, usually decreasing if the medicine is taken with food. Less commonly, skin reactions (rashes, redness) or temporary blurring of vision may be experienced, particularly when starting treatment, due to initial fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults: The initial dose is 30 mg daily (half of a 60 mg tablet).
- The dose can be increased to 60 mg, 90 mg, or 120 mg daily, based on blood sugar control.
- The maximum recommended daily dosage is 120 mg.
Not recommended for children or adolescents. Continue treatment for as long as recommended to help control the underlying condition.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to the medicine, other drugs in the same chemical class, or related anti-infectives. It should not be used for a form of the condition where the body does not produce insulin, or in the presence of severe complications like diabetic coma or severe ketoacidosis. It is also unsuitable for those with significantly reduced liver or kidney function. Co-administration with an antifungal agent from the azole class is not permitted.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Use is generally avoided throughout pregnancy as alternative options are considered more suitable for managing the condition during this time. The use of this medicine is contraindicated while providing sustenance to an infant.
Special Precautions
- Monitor closely for signs of low blood sugar, especially in individuals with irregular eating habits, malnutrition, or following prolonged/strenuous physical activity.
- Exercise caution in patients with reduced liver or kidney function (mild to moderate impairment).
- Increased monitoring may be needed during times of stress, such as fever, injury, or surgery.
- The medicine requires careful use in patients with a hereditary condition known as G6PD deficiency due to the risk of blood cell issues.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
The blood sugar lowering effect may be enhanced when combined with other drugs for the same condition, certain pain relievers, and some antibiotics, increasing the risk of low blood sugar. The effect may be reduced by medications such as anti-inflammatory steroids and certain agents for nervous system disorders, which can lead to high blood sugar. It can also intensify the effects of medicines that reduce blood clotting.
How should I store it?
Store in the original package at room temperature, ideally below 25°C. Keep the medicine protected from moisture and direct light to maintain stability and effectiveness.
