Side Effects

DIABEATS Glimepiride 3mg common side effects include: low blood sugar, which may manifest as trembling, shaking, anxiety, sweating, or dizziness; headache; nausea; and dizziness. In some cases, a change in blood cell counts can occur, which may be reversible upon discontinuation. Very rare but serious reactions may involve the liver, such as jaundice, or severe hypersensitivity reactions that can progress to life-threatening conditions. Gastrointestinal issues like vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain are uncommon.

Directions and Dosage

The dosage is tailored to achieve the desired blood glucose level. It must be the lowest amount sufficient for metabolic control.

  • Dosage for Adults: The usual starting daily dose is 1 mg. If satisfactory control is achieved, this dose can be used for maintenance.
  • The dose may be increased based on blood glucose control, in increments of 1 mg to 2 mg, at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks, to 2 mg, 3 mg, or 4 mg per day.
  • Daily doses exceeding 4 mg are rarely more effective. The maximum recommended daily dose is 8 mg.

Normally a single daily dose is sufficient, taken shortly before or during a main meal. A dose reduction may be necessary if improvement in blood sugar control leads to a higher sensitivity to the product.

Contraindications

The product should not be used in individuals with a known allergy to the active ingredient, other medicines in the sulfonylurea class, or sulfonamide derivatives. It is not suitable for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma, or severe impairments of liver or kidney function.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

It is not recommended for use in this period.

Special Precautions

  • Consumption of alcohol may severely affect blood sugar levels, either increasing or decreasing them.
  • Exposure to strong sunlight should be avoided as it may cause skin reactions.
  • The effectiveness may decrease over time, requiring a dose adjustment.
  • Use with caution in debilitated or malnourished individuals.
  • Patients with an inherited condition affecting red blood cells (G6PD deficiency) should use it with care due to the potential for a blood disorder.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Taking this medication with certain other drugs can either increase the risk of low blood sugar or reduce the blood sugar-lowering effect. Caution is needed when co-administering with other blood sugar-lowering agents, as the risk of severely low blood sugar is increased. Changes in blood glucose control may also occur when taken with certain other classes of medication, requiring close monitoring.

How should I store it?
