Indications / Uses

DILANTIN 100mg is used for the management and prevention of seizures associated with epilepsy. It is particularly effective for controlling tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures. The medication works by stabilizing the neuronal membrane and reducing seizure activity. DILANTIN is also occasionally used to prevent seizures following neurosurgery, providing reliable control in various clinical scenarios.

Side-effects

DILANTIN 100mg common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and unsteadiness. Some individuals may also experience nausea or gum enlargement. These side effects are generally mild and may diminish over time. If any unusual symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to discontinue use. Monitoring for adverse reactions is important, especially during the initial stages of treatment.

Dosage / Direction

Adult Dosage: For capsules, start at 300 mg daily in divided doses, adjusting to 300-400 mg as needed, up to 600 mg. For suspension, begin with 125 mg three times daily, increasing to a maximum of 625 mg if necessary. For a rapid start, a 1 g loading dose may be used in a clinical setting.
Pediatric Dosage: Start with 5 mg/kg/day for capsules or suspension, divided into doses, with a maximum of 300 mg daily. Maintenance is typically 4-8 mg/kg, with children over 6 possibly needing the adult dose of 300 mg/day.
Special Populations: Dosage may need adjustment for elderly patients due to decreased clearance.

Contraindications

Should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to phenytoin or any of its components. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of liver damage related to phenytoin use. Reviewing the patient’s medical history is essential to avoid contraindicated use.
