Indications / Uses
ZOSART 62.5 Losartan / Hydrochlorothiazide 50 / 12.5 is used for the management of high blood pressure (hypertension) in individuals whose condition is not adequately controlled with either ingredient alone. The combination works synergistically, with one component relaxing blood vessels and the other assisting the body in eliminating excess water and salt. This dual action is effective for lowering overall blood pressure. It is also indicated to decrease the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as stroke, in patients with hypertension who have left ventricular hypertrophy (enlarged heart).

Side Effects
ZOSART 62.5 Losartan / Hydrochlorothiazide 50 / 12.5 common side effects include a general feeling of being unwell, dizziness or lightheadedness, and headache. More serious, but less frequent, reactions may involve sudden swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or changes in blood electrolyte levels that could result in muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. Additionally, one of the components may rarely cause an acute onset of blurred vision or ocular pain. Monitoring for these and other unusual or persistent symptoms is important.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults (18+ years): The usual initial and maintenance dosage is 1 tablet once daily.
For patients who do not respond adequately to this strength, the dosage may be adjusted to a maximum daily dose equivalent to Losartan 100 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg. This maximum daily amount can be taken as two tablets of the 50 mg/12.5 mg strength. Use is not recommended for children younger than 6 years of age.
Contraindications
This medication should not be used by individuals who have a known severe sensitivity to the components or to any related sulfonamide-derived substances. It is contraindicated in patients with an inability to produce urine (anuria) or those with severe kidney impairment. Avoid use in cases of severe liver problems, bile duct obstruction, or therapy-resistant low potassium or high calcium levels in the blood.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy is associated with a risk of fetal injury, including potential damage and death to the developing fetus. Components of the compound are known to pass into milk, and a risk to the nursing infant cannot be definitively ruled out.
Special Precautions
- Observe for signs of fluid or electrolyte imbalance, such as low sodium or low potassium, especially during periods of vomiting or diarrhea.
- The compound may cause an acute onset of transient blurred vision or eye pain, which should be immediately reported.
- Use with caution in individuals with pre-existing kidney or liver problems.
- Be cautious with sun exposure as the compound may increase skin sensitivity, and long-term use is associated with a higher risk of non-melanoma skin cancer.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
Use of this compound with other medications that increase potassium levels, such as potassium-sparing substances, should be avoided as it may lead to dangerously high potassium levels. Co-administration with certain anti-inflammatory pain relievers can potentially harm the kidneys. Adjustments may be necessary if taken with anti-diabetic agents or cholesterol-lowering resins.
How should I store it?
Store the medication in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original packaging at a consistent room temperature.
