Description

Indications / Uses

Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Losartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily.

Side-effects

Losartan common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue. Some individuals may experience cough, nasal congestion, or back pain. Less common but more serious side effects include allergic reactions and kidney problems.

Dosage / Direction

Adults, Teenagers, and Older Adults
Start with 50mg (one tablet) once daily. Full effect on blood pressure may take 3-6 weeks. Dose may increase to 100mg (two tablets) once daily if needed. Consult doctor or pharmacist if dosage adjustment is required.

Patients with High Blood Pressure and Type 2 Diabetes
Begin with 50mg (one tablet) daily. Depending on blood pressure response, may increase to 100mg (two tablets) daily. Can be taken with other blood pressure and diabetes medications.

Adult Patients with Heart Failure
Initiate treatment with 12.5mg once daily. Increase gradually over several weeks: 12.5mg daily in week 1, 25mg daily in week 2, 50mg daily in week 3, 100mg daily in week 4, up to 150mg daily as directed. Often used with diuretics, digitalis, and/or beta-blockers for heart failure management.

Special Patient Groups
Lower initial doses may be recommended for those starting with high diuretic doses, liver impairment, or
patients aged 75 and older. Avoid in severe liver impairment cases.

Take each tablet with water, at the same time every day. Keep taking them unless your doctor tells you to stop. You can split the 50mg tablet evenly using the score line if needed.

Contraindications

Losartan should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to losartan or any of the other ingredients. It is generally not recommended for pregnant women, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it can harm the unborn baby.

Special Precautions

Exercise caution when using losartan if you have a history of kidney or liver problems. This medication can cause dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when you first start taking it or when the dose is increased. Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position to reduce the risk of dizziness.

Is it safe to take it with other drugs?

Losartan can interact with several other medications, including other blood pressure medications, diuretics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is important to be aware of potential drug interactions.

How should I store it?

Store it at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.
