Indications / Uses

NORVATROL Amlodipine 10mg is used for the management of high blood pressure, a condition known as hypertension, in adults and children 6 years of age and older. It is also indicated for the symptomatic treatment of chronic stable angina (long-term chest pain) and vasospastic angina, also called Prinzmetal’s angina. This medication functions by relaxing the blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily throughout the body and lessens the workload on the heart. It can also help to reduce the risk of hospitalization for angina and the need for coronary revascularization procedures in patients with coronary artery disease.

Side Effects

NORVATROL Amlodipine 10mg common side effects include swelling of the feet or ankles, which is a very common reaction, sometimes referred to as edema. Other common reactions are headache, sleepiness, and dizziness, particularly when therapy is first initiated. Individuals may also experience flushing, which is a sudden feeling of warmth or redness, abdominal pain, nausea, or palpitations (a fast or irregular heart sensation). These effects are generally mild and may decrease in severity over time as the body adapts to the new treatment regimen.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years) for High Blood Pressure and Angina: The typical starting dose is 5 mg once daily. The dose can be increased up to a maximum of 10 mg once daily.
• Dosage for Elderly Patients: An initial dose of 2.5 mg once daily is recommended.
• Dosage for Kids 6–17 years: The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended daily dosage is 5 mg.

This medication is not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Treatment is generally a long-term commitment for chronic conditions.

Contraindications

Use is not appropriate for individuals with severely reduced blood pressure (severe hypotension). It should also not be used if experiencing cardiogenic shock or any severe narrowing of the main heart valve, such as high-grade aortic stenosis. Use is also inappropriate in cases of unstable heart failure that occur immediately after an acute heart attack.

Special Precautions

• Cautious use is required for individuals with existing heart problems, especially those with severe heart valve conditions.
• Special care is advised for anyone with liver function impairment, as removal of the substance from the body may be slowed.
• Lower initial doses are often recommended for elderly patients due to potentially slower processing of the treatment.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Use with specific antibiotics, antifungal agents, and certain cholesterol-lowering medications should be closely monitored as they can affect how the body handles this substance. Combining this with certain other treatments for heart conditions or blood pressure can result in increased effects. Furthermore, consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice should be avoided as it can increase the concentration of the substance in the body.

How should I store it?

Keep the tablets in the original packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Store at a consistent room temperature, away from excessive heat.
