NEBICAR Nebivolol 5mg is used for the management of essential hypertension, which can be taken alone or combined with other anti-hypertensive agents to lower blood pressure. It is also indicated for the treatment of stable mild and moderate chronic heart failure, particularly in elderly patients over 70 years of age, as an addition to existing standard heart failure therapies. This medication belongs to the beta-blocker class, which helps the heart beat slower and with less force. Lowering blood pressure is crucial for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks.

Side Effects

NEBICAR Nebivolol 5mg common side effects include headache, dizziness, and feelings of tiredness or weakness. Other frequently reported effects are a slower heart rate, nausea, and gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea. Less common but notable effects can include swelling in the legs or feet, difficulty sleeping, or numbness/tingling sensations. Severe effects, such as breathing difficulties, rapid weight gain, or an unusually slow or irregular heartbeat, warrant immediate attention.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (Hypertension): The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily.
• Dosage may be increased every 2 weeks, with a maximum daily dose not to exceed 40 mg.
• Dosage for Elderly (≥70 years, Heart Failure): Treatment is started low, typically 1.25 mg once daily, and slowly increased.
• The maximum recommended daily dose for chronic heart failure treatment is 10 mg.
• Dosage for Patients with Severe Kidney Impairment: The initial recommended dose is 2.5 mg once daily, increased slowly if required.

Use in individuals under 18 years of age is not recommended as safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents. Treatment should not be stopped suddenly.

Contraindications

This medicine is restricted for use in patients with known allergy to the formulation components. It must not be taken by individuals who have a dangerously slow heart rate, severe heart conduction disturbances, or certain serious heart conditions like cardiogenic shock or acute heart failure. It is also restricted in cases of severe liver impairment, severe asthma, and metabolic disorders such as metabolic acidosis.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The use of this treatment during gestation should be weighed against the risks, as animal studies have indicated potential effects on the fetus. It is not known if the substance passes into human milk; however, because of the possibility of serious adverse reactions in infants, use while nursing is not recommended.

Special Precautions

• Exercise caution when administered to individuals with kidney disease, moderate liver impairment, or circulation problems in the limbs.
• Sudden cessation of treatment must be avoided, as this may lead to worsening chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or acute cardiovascular events.
• It should be used carefully in patients with diabetes or an overactive thyroid, as the substance may mask symptoms like a rapid heart rate.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The combined use of this medication with other heart rate-slowing agents, such as certain calcium-channel blockers, can lead to an additive effect, potentially requiring close monitoring. Combining it with certain drugs for depression or irregular heart rhythm can increase its levels in the body, raising the risk of side effects.

How should I store it?

Store the tablets at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep them protected from light and moisture, and ensure they remain securely out of reach of children.
