Indications / Uses

LOSAAR 50 Losartan 50mg is used for treating essential hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, in adult patients. As an angiotensin II receptor blocker, it works by relaxing the blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily, thereby lowering blood pressure. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension who have left ventricular hypertrophy and offers crucial kidney protection for individuals with type 2 diabetes and proteinuria.

Side Effects

LOSAAR 50 Losartan 50mg common side effects include: dizziness, nasal congestion, back pain, and feelings of fatigue. Less frequently reported effects involve muscle cramps, digestive discomfort, and elevated potassium levels, which require monitoring. Rare but serious reactions may sometimes occur, such as chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, or various signs of an allergic manifestation.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): 1 tablet (50mg) once daily is the usual starting dosage.
• Hypertension with left ventricular hypertrophy: The initial dosage is 50mg daily, which may be increased to 100mg daily based on the response.

Maximum daily dosage for most indications is 100mg, administered as a single dose or divided into two doses. For patients with impaired liver function or those who are volume-depleted, a lower starting dosage is usually required. Not recommended for children under 6 years.

Contraindications

Avoid use if there is a known hypersensitivity to the components of this medication. It is also contraindicated in individuals with bilateral renal artery stenosis or a history of angioedema related to similar blood pressure-lowering agents.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Discontinue the use of this medication immediately upon detection of pregnancy as it poses a significant risk of fetal injury or death. This substance is excreted into breast milk, and therefore, breastfeeding should be avoided during the course of treatment due to potential risks to the infant.

Special Precautions

• Monitor kidney function closely, especially in patients with pre-existing renal conditions.
• Ensure adequate hydration to help prevent sudden drops in blood pressure.
• Regularly check potassium levels in the blood, particularly if there is an existing kidney impairment.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Combining it with potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements may dangerously increase potassium levels in the body. Concomitant use with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents may result in reduced effectiveness. The combination with aliskiren must be avoided in individuals with diabetes.

How should I store it?

Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C in the original packaging. Ensure the container is tightly closed, protected from both moisture and direct sunlight.
