ISOLYTE Isosorbide Mononitrate 30mg is used for the long-term prevention and treatment of angina pectoris, or chest pain, caused by coronary artery disease. It is a vasodilator that helps by relaxing the blood vessels, which increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload. This prolonged-release formulation is not intended to treat an acute angina attack that has already started, as it does not work fast enough.

Side Effects

ISOLYTE Isosorbide Mononitrate 30mg common side effects include headache, which can be severe and is a frequent sign that the medication is working, but it often reduces as treatment continues. Other commonly reported effects are dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, flushing, and a feeling of tiredness or sleep disturbance. Hypotension (low blood pressure) may also occur, especially when moving quickly from a sitting or lying position, so getting up slowly can help minimize this effect.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults: The typical initial dose for the prolonged-release tablet is 30 mg to 60 mg once daily in the morning. This may be increased up to 120 mg once daily. Increases should be done gradually.

Safety and efficacy have not been established for children. The prolonged-release tablet must be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or split. The medication is usually taken for a long time, often indefinitely, for prophylaxis.

Contraindications

This medication should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to the components or to any other organic nitrates. It is also contraindicated for individuals taking phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors (such as sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, or avanafil), or the guanylate cyclase stimulator riociguat, due to the risk of severe hypotension.

Special Precautions

• Use with caution in conditions such as low blood pressure (hypotension), recent heart attack, heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
• Individuals prone to volume depletion, for example from chronic diarrhea or vomiting, should use this product cautiously due to increased risk of low blood pressure.
• Take care when operating machinery or driving, as the product may cause dizziness or lightheadedness.
• Avoid sudden discontinuation to prevent possible worsening of symptoms.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concomitant use with certain other medications can increase the risk of severe adverse effects, particularly low blood pressure. Combining it with other vasodilators or medications for high blood pressure may also increase the hypotensive effect. Caution is advised with various other drug classes due to potential for altered drug levels or increased side effects.
