Indications/Uses
Tranexamic Acid is an antifibrinolytic agent. It acts principally by inhibiting plasminogen activators and is used in the treatment of hemorrhage, or threatened hemorrhage, associated with excessive fibrinolysis. It is many times more potent than aminocaproic acid.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 to 1.5 g or 15 to 25 mg per body weight 2 to 4 times a day to be given by mouth. These doses should be reduced in patients with renal impairment.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Active IV clotting.
Special Precautions
Tranexamic Acid is contra-indicated in patients with active intravenous clotting and caution is necessary in any condition which may predispose to thrombosis. Use in disseminated intravascular coagulation is potentially dangerous and may result in serious thrombosis. If tranexamic acid has to be used in this condition, it should be accompanied by heparin. Tranexamic acid should be withdrawn if patient develops muscle pain or weakness.
Adverse Reactions
Tranexamic Acid is considered to be better tolerated than aminocaproic acid. Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. There may be a hypotensive reaction to rapid intravenous administration.
Like aminocaproic acid, there is a risk of the lysis of existing clots being inhibited, unlike it myopathy does not appear to be a problem.

Drug Interactions
Serious thrombosis in disseminated intravascular coagulation use.
Storage
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
Action
Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics: Absorption and Fate: Tranexamic Acid is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Up to about 30% of the dose by mouth and at least 90% of the dose by intravenous injection is reported to be excreted in the urine within 24 hours.
