Indications / Uses

CLOZID-25 Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg is used for the control of essential hypertension, or high blood pressure, which helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. It is also indicated for the management of edema, which is the accumulation of fluid associated with conditions like congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and various forms of renal dysfunction. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as thiazide diuretics, often referred to as "water pills."

Side Effects

CLOZID-25 Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg common side effects include: dizziness, headache, weakness, and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. More significant, less common side effects can involve electrolyte imbalances, specifically low potassium levels, which may manifest as muscle cramps or unusual tiredness. Other potential effects are low blood pressure, especially when changing positions, and increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity), necessitating sun protection measures. Rarely, severe skin reactions and blood disorders have been reported.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years) for Edema: Initial dose is typically 25 mg to 100 mg daily in 1 to 3 divided doses. Maintenance dose is 25 mg to 100 mg daily as a single or divided dose. Maximum daily dosage is 200 mg.
• Dosage for Adults (18+ years) for Hypertension: Initial dose is 12.5 mg to 50 mg once daily. Maintenance dose is 25 mg to 100 mg once daily. The maximum recommended daily dosage for optimal balance between efficacy and safety is 50 mg, although dosages up to 100 mg daily have been used.
• Dosage for Infants under 6 months: Up to 3 mg/kg daily, given in 2 divided doses. Maximum daily dosage for this age group is 37.5 mg.
• Dosage for Kids 6 months to 12 years: 1 mg/kg to 2 mg/kg daily, given as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Maximum daily dosage is 3 mg/kg or 100 mg, whichever is less.

Contraindications

The product should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs. It is also contraindicated in patients who have anuria (failure of the kidneys to produce urine) or severe renal impairment due to potential ineffectiveness and risk of precipitating azotemia.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The medicine crosses the placental barrier and can be detected in the umbilical cord blood. Its use during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, should be avoided unless clearly indicated. It is distributed into breast milk and should be used with caution while breastfeeding.

Special Precautions

• Use with caution in those with pre-existing renal disease, as it may decrease glomerular filtration rate and potentially worsen conditions like azotemia.
• Exercise care in individuals with hepatic impairment, as minor fluid and electrolyte changes could trigger hepatic coma.
• May cause or aggravate electrolyte imbalances such as low potassium, low sodium, or high calcium levels.
• Caution is advised in patients with diabetes mellitus, as it may impair control of blood sugar levels.
• Potential risk of non-melanoma skin cancer with long-term use; sun exposure should be limited.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concurrent use with certain medications, like lithium, is generally avoided as it can slow the clearance of lithium, raising the risk of toxicity. Combining it with other blood pressure lowering agents, corticosteroids, or some cholesterol-lowering drugs may require monitoring or dosage adjustments for safety and effectiveness. Anti-diabetic drugs may need dosage adjustments due to potential effects on blood sugar.

The product should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the medication in a secure place out of sight and reach of children.
