CLOZID-12.5 Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg is used for the management of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, either alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents. It is also employed as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of fluid retention (edema) associated with various conditions, including congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and corticosteroid or estrogen therapy. This medication works by increasing the amount of urine the body produces, which helps to remove excess water and salt.

For managing high blood pressure, do not exceed 50 mg daily. For the treatment of fluid retention, dosages should not generally exceed 100 mg daily.

Contraindications

Avoid using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the active component or to any other sulfonamide-derived medications. It is also contraindicated in individuals with anuria, which is a condition where the kidneys are unable to produce urine. Use is also generally restricted in the presence of severe renal or hepatic impairment.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The use of this drug is not recommended during pregnancy as it may affect the developing baby. In terms of lactation, low daily doses (50 mg or less) may be acceptable, however, higher doses have been noted to potentially reduce breastmilk production.

Special Precautions

  • Regular monitoring of the body’s essential mineral and salt levels is necessary to prevent imbalances, particularly low potassium and sodium levels.
  • Patients with pre-existing kidney or liver issues, or those with a history of gout or lupus erythematosus, should use this drug with care.
  • Limit exposure to direct sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light, as the medication can increase the skin's sensitivity and the risk of certain skin conditions with long-term use.
  • Promptly report any visual changes, as the medicine may cause an acute vision problem that requires immediate attention.
