Indications / Uses

CLOZID-12.5 Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg is used for the management of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, either alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents. It is also employed as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of fluid retention (edema) associated with various conditions, including congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and corticosteroid or estrogen therapy. This medication works by increasing the amount of urine the body produces, which helps to remove excess water and salt.

Side Effects

CLOZID-12.5 Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg common side effects include: headache, feelings of light-headedness or dizziness, and unusual tiredness or weakness. Other reported effects may involve digestive discomfort such as nausea and vomiting, as well as pain in the stomach or abdominal area. Although less common, the medication has also been associated with problems like sexual dysfunction. Additionally, there is a noted increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer with long-term use, so sun exposure should be limited.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): For managing high blood pressure, the typical starting dose is 12.5 mg to 25 mg once daily.
• For the treatment of fluid retention, the initial dosage may range from 25 mg to 100 mg daily, administered as a single dose or in two divided doses.

For managing high blood pressure, do not exceed 50 mg daily. For the treatment of fluid retention, dosages should not generally exceed 100 mg daily.

Contraindications

Avoid using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the active component or to any other sulfonamide-derived medications. It is also contraindicated in individuals with anuria, which is a condition where the kidneys are unable to produce urine. Use is also generally restricted in the presence of severe renal or hepatic impairment.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The use of this drug is not recommended during pregnancy as it may affect the developing baby. In terms of lactation, low daily doses (50 mg or less) may be acceptable, however, higher doses have been noted to potentially reduce breastmilk production.

Special Precautions

• Regular monitoring of the body’s essential mineral and salt levels is necessary to prevent imbalances, particularly low potassium and sodium levels.
• Patients with pre-existing kidney or liver issues, or those with a history of gout or lupus erythematosus, should use this drug with care.
• Limit exposure to direct sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light, as the medication can increase the skin's sensitivity and the risk of certain skin conditions with long-term use.
• Promptly report any visual changes, as the medicine may cause an acute vision problem that requires immediate attention.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This medication may interact with certain other drugs, especially those used to treat high blood pressure, leading to an exaggerated lowering of pressure. Adjustments may be required for agents used to manage blood sugar or for medications intended for gout, as the active component can affect the levels of blood glucose and uric acid.

How should I store it?

Store the tablets in a cool, dry location below 25°C. Keep the medicine sealed in its original container to protect it from moisture and light.
