CLODIN Clonidine 75mcg is used for the management of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, which includes dealing with severe elevations in blood pressure such as a hypertensive crisis. This medication works by stimulating alpha-adrenoceptors in the brainstem, which reduces sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system. This action leads to a decrease in peripheral resistance, heart rate, and overall blood pressure. Furthermore, it is also indicated for the prevention of migraine or recurrent vascular headaches and for the effective treatment of flushing and other symptoms associated with menopause.

Side Effects

CLODIN Clonidine 75mcg common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, and constipation, which often diminish as the body adjusts to the medication. Other frequently reported effects involve feeling tired, general weakness, and experiencing a headache, sometimes accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Less common, but serious, effects can involve cardiovascular changes like bradycardia, along with potential central nervous system effects such as sleep disorder, nervousness, or mental depression. Sexual dysfunction, including impotence or decreased sexual activity, is also a possibility.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (Hypertension): Initial oral dose is 50 mcg to 100 mcg, three times daily. This may be increased every 2nd or 3rd day based on response.
• Maintenance Dosage for Adults (Hypertension): The usual maintenance dosage ranges from 300 mcg to 1200 mcg daily. In severe cases, daily dosages of 1800 mcg or more may be required. Do not exceed 2400 mcg daily.
• Dosage for Adults (Migraine or Menopausal Flushing Prophylaxis): The starting dosage is 50 mcg twice daily, which may be increased to 75 mcg twice daily if symptoms persist after 2 weeks.

Use is not recommended for children and adolescents due to limited data supporting safety and effectiveness in this age group for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Contraindications

This product is contraindicated for individuals who have a known hypersensitivity or severe allergic reaction to the active component or any other constituent within the formulation.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy is recommended only when the need is clear, as the medication can cross into the placental barrier and potentially affect the heart rate of the developing fetus. The active component is also excreted into human milk.

Special Precautions

• Individuals with heart rhythm or conduction system diseases, such as those affecting the rhythmic and AV conduction systems, should exercise caution.
• Adjustments in the regimen may be necessary for those with impaired kidney function or established renal failure.
• Avoid sudden cessation of the treatment, as abrupt stopping may lead to withdrawal symptoms, including a rapid and dangerous increase in blood pressure.
• The preparation can impair the ability to drive or operate complex machinery due to potential side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This product may increase the sedative effects when combined with alcohol, barbiturates, or other drugs that depress the central nervous system. Conversely, taking it simultaneously with tricyclic antidepressants might diminish its blood pressure-lowering effect, possibly necessitating an adjustment in the amount used.

How should I store it?

Keep the tablets in a dry location and ensure the storage temperature does not go above 30°C. The product should be kept secure in its original packaging.
