CARDOXIN Digoxin 250mcg is used for treating mild to moderate chronic heart failure, especially when the condition is accompanied by atrial fibrillation or ventricular dilatation. It is also indicated for the management of certain supraventricular arrhythmias, particularly chronic atrial flutter and fibrillation. This medicine works by increasing the force of the heart's contractions and helping to control the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat. Its use helps to improve blood circulation and overall cardiac efficiency.

Side Effects

CARDOXIN Digoxin 250mcg common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which are often early signs of toxicity. Cardiac adverse effects are the most serious and include a slow or irregular heartbeat, which may progress to potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. Other effects can involve the nervous system, leading to dizziness, headache, confusion, and changes in vision, such as blurred vision or objects appearing with a yellow-green tint.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults: The usual maintenance dose is 125 mcg to 250 mcg daily. Doses can range from 62.5 mcg to 500 mcg daily.
• Loading Dose for Adults (when needed): A total of 750 mcg to 1500 mcg may be given by mouth over the initial 24 hours, often in divided doses at 6-hour intervals. A loading dose may be unnecessary for those with milder conditions.
• Dosage for Neonates and Infants (0 to 24 months): Dosing is based on body weight and age (full-term or premature) and is carefully adjusted based on total loading dose, usually given over 3 divided doses, followed by a maintenance dose.
• Dosage for Kids 2–10 years: Dosing is based on body weight, with a loading dose given over 3 divided doses, followed by a maintenance dose given in 2 divided doses daily.

Lower doses are often necessary for older individuals, those with low lean body mass, or those with impaired kidney function. Maximum daily dosage varies greatly and is determined by careful monitoring of blood levels and clinical response.

Contraindications

The preparation should not be used in individuals with a known severe allergy to the drug or any of its components. It is also unsuitable for those with a certain type of heart rhythm disorder known as ventricular fibrillation. Use is generally avoided in those with a condition where a fast heartbeat may be precipitated by an accessory pathway in the heart, such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Special Precautions

• Extreme caution is required in individuals with partial heart block, as complete heart block may occur.
• Care is needed in those with sinus node disorders, recent severe heart attack, or acute inflammation of the heart muscle.
• Dosing adjustments are necessary for individuals with impaired kidney function or certain thyroid conditions.
• Regular monitoring of blood levels is essential due to the narrow margin between effective and toxic doses.

Many medications can significantly increase the levels of this preparation in the body, which raises the risk of toxicity; such agents include certain heart rhythm regulators. Conversely, other medications like some antacids and certain laxatives can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of this preparation.
