Indications / Uses

XYCLOVIRAX Aciclovir 400mg is used for the treatment of viral infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, including genital herpes and cold sores. It is also indicated for the prevention of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients. Additionally, this medication is effective in managing shingles (herpes zoster) and chickenpox (varicella), helping to reduce the severity and duration of the outbreak and associated pain.

Side Effects

XYCLOVIRAX Aciclovir 400mg common side effects include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Some users may also experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue, or skin rashes and itching. While usually mild, persistent symptoms should be monitored. Fever and light sensitivity are occasionally reported during treatment cycles.

Directions and Dosage

• Adults (18+ years): For Herpes Simplex, 200 mg 5 times daily or 400 mg 2 to 3 times daily. For Herpes Zoster (Shingles), 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days.
• Kids 6-18 years: For Varicella (Chickenpox), 20 mg/kg (up to 800 mg) 4 times daily for 5 days.
• Kids 2-5 years: 400 mg 4 times daily for 5 days for chickenpox treatment.
• Infants and Kids under 2 years: 200 mg 4 times daily for 5 days.

Maximum daily dosage for adults is 4000 mg. Duration of treatment typically ranges from 5 to 10 days depending on the severity of the infection.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity or allergy to the active substance or valaciclovir. Use with caution in patients with significant renal impairment or neurological abnormalities.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The active ingredient passes into breast milk. It should only be used when the clinical benefits significantly outweigh any potential unknown risks to the developing fetus or nursing infant.

Special Precautions

• Maintain adequate hydration during treatment to prevent crystals forming in the kidneys.
• Dosage adjustments are necessary for elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function.
• Risk of neurological side effects is higher in patients with renal failure.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concurrent use with medications that affect kidney function, such as probenecid or cimetidine, may increase the concentration of the antiviral in the blood. Always monitor for increased toxicity when combining with mycophenolate mofetil.
