Indications / Uses

XYCLOVIRAX Aciclovir 200mg is used for the management of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which includes initial and recurrent genital herpes and cold sores (herpes labialis). It is also utilized for the prophylaxis of HSV infections in immunocompromised individuals and for the treatment of infections caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), such as chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster). Timely administration helps lessen the severity of the outbreak and accelerates the healing process.

Side Effects 

XYCLOVIRAX Aciclovir 200mg common side effects include: headache, dizziness, and mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Some people may also experience skin rash, including photosensitivity reactions. Less common but possible effects involve fatigue or central nervous system effects such as confusion, tremors, or agitation, particularly in elderly individuals or those with reduced kidney function. Maintaining adequate hydration during the treatment course is important to support kidney function.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (Treatment of Herpes Simplex): 200 mg, 5 times daily, typically for 5 days. For severely immunocompromised patients or those with impaired absorption, a double dose of 400 mg 5 times daily may be used.
• Dosage for Adults (Suppression of Herpes Simplex): 200 mg 4 times daily, or 400 mg 2 times daily.
• Dosage for Adults (Treatment of Herpes Zoster): 800 mg 5 times daily, typically for 7 days.
• Dosage for Kids 2 years and over (Treatment and Prophylaxis of Herpes Simplex): Same as adult dose.
• Dosage for Kids under 2 years (Treatment and Prophylaxis of Herpes Simplex): Half the adult dose.
• Dosage for Kids 2 years and over (Treatment of Varicella): 20 mg/kg 4 times daily for 5 days; the maximum daily dosage is 800 mg 4 times daily.

Treatment should be started as soon as possible after the onset of infection for best results. Duration of treatment varies by condition and may be extended in immunocompromised patients.

Contraindications

Avoid use if there is a known hypersensitivity to the active component or to valaciclovir. The product is not suitable for individuals who have had previous severe allergic reactions to any of the ingredients in the tablet.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Limited studies suggest that the component does not pose a significant risk when used during pregnancy, but its consumption should be based on a clear need. The active substance can pass into breast milk; therefore, careful consideration is needed before using this product while nursing a baby.

Special Precautions

• Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystal formation in the urinary system, especially with high doses or in people with reduced kidney function.
• Dose adjustments are required for individuals with existing kidney impairment to prevent accumulation of the active substance.
• Use with caution in elderly individuals who may be more prone to central nervous system effects due to decreased kidney clearance.
• The use of this product for genital infections does not prevent transmission to others.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concomitant administration with certain substances that affect kidney function can increase the concentration of this product in the blood, which may raise the potential for side effects. For example, some immune-suppressing agents and medications used for gout may interact, necessitating dosage adjustments.
