Indications/Uses
Infections due to Staph resistant to benzylpenicillin including bone & joint infection, endocarditis, peritonitis, pneumonia, skin & soft tissue infection; prophylaxis of surgical infection & toxic shock syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mild & moderate upper resp tract, localized skin & soft tissue infections Adult & childn >40 kg 250-500 mg 4-6 hrly. Childn <40 kg 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses 6 hrly. More severe infections eg, lower resp tract infections or disseminated infections Adult & childn >40 kg ≥1 g 4-6 hrly. Childn <40 kg ≥100 mg/kg/day in divided doses 4-6 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins.
Special Precautions
Monitoring of renal & hematological status during prolonged & high-dose therapy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reaction especially skin rash, urticaria, maculopapular rashes, angioedema & anaphylaxis. Serum sickness-like reactions, hemolytic anemia & acute interstitial nephritis. Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction in patients w/ syphilis.
Drug Interactions
May decrease efficacy of OC. Probenecid, rifampin.
