Indications / Uses

SAPHLEXIN-C500 Cefalexin 500mg is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections in the body. It is highly effective against infections of the respiratory tract, such as pharyngitis, as well as middle ear infections. This medication is also indicated for skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, and genitourinary tract infections, including acute prostatitis and uncomplicated cystitis.

Side Effects

SAPHLEXIN-C500 Cefalexin 500mg common side effects include: gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Other common reactions are dizziness and headache. Less common but more serious effects reported are allergic reactions, including skin rash, itching, and hives. There is also a potential for a severe form of inflammation in the colon, which can lead to persistent watery or bloody diarrhea.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (15+ years): The typical dose ranges from 1 to 4 grams daily, taken in divided doses. For mild infections like skin infections or uncomplicated urinary tract infections, 250 mg is often taken every 6 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours.
• Dosage for Severe Infections: More severe infections may require higher dosages, up to a maximum of 4 grams per day.
• Dosage for Kids (1 year & up): The usual recommended daily dosage is 25 to 50 mg per kg of body weight, divided into doses taken every 6 to 8 hours. For middle ear infections (otitis media), the total daily dosage may be increased to 75 to 100 mg per kg of body weight, divided into 4 doses.

The maximum daily dose for any person should not exceed 4 grams. The treatment duration for certain bacterial infections, such as those caused by streptococci, should be at least 10 days.

Contraindications

This medicine is contraindicated in individuals with a known history of major allergy or severe hypersensitivity reactions to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. It should also be avoided by those who have a history of a major allergy to penicillin-type medicines, as there is a risk of cross-sensitivity.

Special Precautions

• Caution is necessary for individuals with a history of kidney function impairment, as the clearance of the medicine is affected, and dosage adjustments may be required.
• Exercise caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly severe diarrhea or inflammation of the colon.
• Symptoms related to the nervous system, such as seizures, have been rarely reported, especially in those with reduced kidney function.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The concurrent use of this product with certain medicines, such as those used for diabetes (Metformin) or gout (Probenecid), may affect how the medicine is processed by the body and could lead to increased blood levels of the other medication. Combining it with aminoglycoside-type antibiotics may also increase the risk of adverse effects on the kidneys.

How should I store it?

Store the medicine at a temperature that does not go beyond 30°C. Keep it away from excessive heat and moisture to maintain its stability and effectiveness.
