Indications / Uses

METROZOLE Metronidazole 500mg is used for the treatment of susceptible protozoal infections, including amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis. It is also indicated for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, such as those found in intra-abdominal, skin, and gynecological infections. This medication works by halting the growth of certain bacteria and parasites, helping to resolve various acute and chronic infectious conditions.

Side Effects

METROZOLE Metronidazole 500mg common side effects include: gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. A distinctive, unpleasant metallic taste in the mouth is also frequently reported, along with headache, glossitis, and dry mouth. Less frequently, but of note, are effects on the nervous system like dizziness, lack of coordination, or peripheral neuropathy, as well as severe skin rashes. If any persistent or severe adverse effects occur, use should be discontinued.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults and Adolescents: For many infections, 500 mg every 8 hours is common. For specific conditions like Trichomoniasis, a 2 g single dose or 250 mg to 500 mg taken 2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 7 days may be used. Maximum daily dosage should generally not exceed 4000 mg (4 g).
• Dosage for Kids 1 - 12 years old: Dosage is calculated based on body weight, typically ranging from 35 mg to 50 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 3 doses.
• Dosage for Infants 8 weeks to 12 years old (Anaerobic): 7.5 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours for a usual duration of 7 days.

Treatment duration typically ranges from 5 to 10 days, depending on the infection being managed.

Contraindications

Avoid use if there is a known sensitivity or allergic reaction to the active compound or any other substances belonging to the nitroimidazole class.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The active compound is transferred into milk. A temporary change in feeding method may be necessary during treatment and for a period of 48 hours after the final administration.

Special Precautions

• Use with caution in individuals with active or chronic central nervous system disorders, including a history of seizures.
• Dose adjustment is typically required for individuals with severe liver damage or impairment.
• Patients with certain blood disorders require careful monitoring while undergoing treatment.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The compound can interact with certain blood thinning medications, increasing the risk of bleeding. Concurrent use with disulfiram may lead to psychotic reactions. Other interacting substances include lithium, phenobarbital, and phenytoin, which may require monitoring or dose changes.
