Indications/Uses
Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, UTI including complicated UTI, skin & soft tissue infections. Tab: Treatment of adults >18 yr w/ mild, moderate & severe infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms in the following diseases: Nosocomial pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis; mild to moderate uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections, acute pyelonephritis & uncomplicated UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult 250-500 mg once or bid or 750 mg once daily depending on the type of infection. Infusion 500 mg by slow infusion over 60 min 24 hrly, continued for min of 48-72 hr after the patient has become febrile or evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin & other quinolones. History of CNS disorders. Epilepsy. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents. Tab: Patients w/ history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones administration.
Special Precautions
Avoid exposure to excessive sunlight. Tab: Discontinue use if signs & symptoms of glucose disturbances develop. Myasthenia gravis. Concomitant use w/ hypoglycemics or insulin. Infusion: Pseudomembranous colitis. Severe cases of pneumococcal pneumonia. Nosocomial infections due to P. aeruginosa may require combination therapy. May develop tachycardia & temporary decrease in BP. Epilepsy or history of CNS disorders, hepatic or renal impairment, G6PD deficiency. Maintain adequate fluid intake. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea; headache. Tab: GI, CNS, visual & sensory disturbances; hypersensitivity reactions; eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia; tachycardia, hypotension, edema, syncope, hot flushes, sweating. Infusion: Inj site reaction, insomnia.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, antidiabetic agents. Tab: Tizanidine; oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) & glibenclamide, methotrexate; metal ions (eg, Al, Ca, Mg or Fe) & cations; histamine H2-antagonist, phenytoin, antiarrhythmic (eg, quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone or sotalol). Antihistamines, astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, erythromycin, pentamidine, phenothiazines or TCAs. Antacids, sucralfate, Zn-containing multivit prep. Infusion: Theophylline, NSAIDs, cimetidine.
