Indications / Uses

IFAMSO Rifampicin / Isoniazid 150 / 75 is used for the management of all forms of tuberculosis, including both pulmonary and extrapulmonary infections. This product is generally indicated for use during the continuation phase of short-course treatment regimens. Its components, Rifampicin and Isoniazid, work together to kill or prevent the growth of the bacteria responsible for the disease. This fixed-dose combination simplifies the treatment regimen for patients.

Side Effects

IFAMSO Rifampicin / Isoniazid 150 / 75 common side effects include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain. A significant effect is potential liver dysfunction, which can range from mild enzyme elevation to severe damage. Patients may also notice a harmless reddish-orange discoloration of body fluids, including urine, saliva, tears, and sweat, due to one of its components. Other reactions can involve hypersensitivity and severe skin manifestations. Any symptoms of hepatitis such as malaise, fatigue, or loss of appetite should be immediately reported.

Directions and Dosage

Dosages are based on body weight for the continuation phase (4 months):

• Adults (15+ years) Body weight 30-37 kg: 2 tablets daily.
• Adults (15+ years) Body weight 38-54 kg: 3 tablets daily.
• Adults (15+ years) Body weight 55-70 kg: 4 tablets daily.
• Adults (15+ years) Body weight >70 kg: 5 tablets daily.

Do not exceed 5 tablets in 24 hours. Not recommended for children under 15 years old. Maximum treatment duration for the continuation phase is typically 4 months.

Contraindications

The product is not suitable for individuals with severe existing damage to the liver or those experiencing jaundice. It is also contraindicated for individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to either component.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The active components are known to cross the placenta. If used during the last few weeks of pregnancy, a bleeding risk has been associated in both mother and newborn, and administration of Vitamin K is suggested postpartum. The active ingredients are found in breast milk, though in concentrations too low to be effective for treating the condition in the newborn.

Special Precautions

• Requires careful monitoring of liver function, especially in the elderly and those with existing liver issues or alcohol dependence.
• The treatment may cause a reddish coloration of urine, tears, saliva, and sputum, which can permanently stain contact lenses.
• Caution is advised for people with a history of seizures, nerve damage, or mental health issues.
• Symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, or nausea may signal the need for evaluation.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This combination significantly affects how numerous other medications are processed in the body, potentially reducing their effectiveness. It may decrease the concentration of hormonal contraceptives and many HIV treatments. Adjustments to concurrent treatment regimens may be required.

How should I store it?

Store the product in a dry location, away from excess heat or moisture. Keep the temperature below 30°C to maintain stability.
