Side Effects
HAMBUTOL Ethambutol 400mg common side effects include dose-related visual disturbances such as decreased visual acuity, blurred vision, or loss of red-green color discrimination. These changes are usually reversible but can lead to irreversible loss of sight if not addressed promptly. Other frequent effects are gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite), headache, dizziness, confusion, joint pain, and a general feeling of being unwell. In rare cases, more severe reactions like peripheral neuritis, liver toxicities, or severe skin rashes have been reported.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults (Initial Treatment): 15 mg per kg of body weight once daily.
- Dosage for Adults (Re-treatment): 25 mg per kg of body weight once daily for the first 60 days, then reduce to 15 mg per kg of body weight once daily.
- Dosage for Kids 13+ years: 15-20 mg per kg of body weight daily. Do not exceed 1 g per day.
Not recommended for children under 13 years. The duration of treatment is long-term, often lasting 6 months to 2 years or more.
Contraindications
Do not use if there is a known sensitivity to the active ingredient. It is also not suitable for patients with a pre-existing inflammation of the nerve behind the eye. It is further contraindicated in individuals, such as very young children, who are unable to perceive and report changes in their sight.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy is generally considered acceptable. The medicine is excreted in milk, but studies suggest minimal risk to the infant when used during the lactation period.
Special Precautions
- Individuals with reduced kidney function may require adjustment of the daily amount.
- Monitoring of liver function should be performed before and periodically during treatment.
- Regular examinations of vision, including testing for color discrimination, are required throughout the treatment course.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
The absorption can be significantly decreased when taken simultaneously with antacids that contain aluminum hydroxide. A time gap of at least 4 hours should be maintained between taking this product and any antacid. Use with other systemic medications should be evaluated to avoid potential adverse effects.
How should I store it?
Keep at controlled room temperature, typically between 20°C and 25°C. Store in a dry place and protect the tablets from light and moisture.
