Side Effects

HAMBUTOL Ethambutol 400mg common side effects include dose-related visual disturbances such as decreased visual acuity, blurred vision, or loss of red-green color discrimination. These changes are usually reversible but can lead to irreversible loss of sight if not addressed promptly. Other frequent effects are gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite), headache, dizziness, confusion, joint pain, and a general feeling of being unwell. In rare cases, more severe reactions like peripheral neuritis, liver toxicities, or severe skin rashes have been reported.

Directions and Dosage

  • Dosage for Adults (Initial Treatment): 15 mg per kg of body weight once daily.
  • Dosage for Adults (Re-treatment): 25 mg per kg of body weight once daily for the first 60 days, then reduce to 15 mg per kg of body weight once daily.
  • Dosage for Kids 13+ years: 15-20 mg per kg of body weight daily. Do not exceed 1 g per day.

Not recommended for children under 13 years. The duration of treatment is long-term, often lasting 6 months to 2 years or more.
