Indications / Uses of FLAGEX Metronidazole 500mg Tablet
Metronidazole tablets are anti-infective agents used to treat various infections. These include bacterial infections of the blood, brain, bone, lungs, stomach lining, and pelvic area, as well as infections following childbirth or surgery.
They are also used to treat urinary and genital infections caused by the parasite Trichomonas, genital bacterial infections in women, amoebiasis, giardiasis, gum and teeth infections, infected leg ulcers, pressure sores, stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori, and to prevent infections after surgery.
What are the side-effects of FLAGEX Metronidazole 500mg Tablet?
Metronidazole tablets can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include:
Rare (affecting up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- Allergic reactions: skin rash (itchy), swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, fever, or difficulty breathing.
Very rare (affecting up to 1 in 10,000 people):
- Infections or symptoms like sore throats, mouth ulcers, bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or severe tiredness, possibly due to blood cell issues.
- Severe brain disease symptoms (encephalopathy): fever, stiff neck, headache, vertigo, hallucinations.
- Symptoms of Cerebellar syndrome: poor coordination, shakiness, uncontrolled eye movements, speech and walking difficulties.
- Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice), indicating possible liver issues.
- Severe stomach pain, possibly indicating pancreatitis.
- Red, scaly rash with bumps and blisters (acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis).
Not known (frequency unknown):
- Short-term memory loss due to transient epileptic seizures.
- Symptoms of meningitis: fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light.
- Erythema multiforme: red, circular patches on skin, especially hands and feet.
- Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis: rashes, blisters, and ulcers on skin and mucous membranes, often with fever and flu-like symptoms.
- Acute liver failure in patients with Cockayne Syndrome.
If any of these occur, stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical help.
Dosage / Direction for Use of FLAGEX Metronidazole 500mg Tablet
The recommended dosage for Metronidazole varies depending on the condition being treated:
For bacterial infections:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 800mg followed by 400mg every 8 hours for 7 days (duration may vary).
- Children under 10 years: Use a suitable alternative dosage form.
For anaerobic infections:
- Children 8 weeks-12 years: 20-30mg/kg/day, or 7.5mg/kg every 8 hours for 7 days, with possible dose increase to 40mg/kg based on infection severity.
- Children under 8 weeks: 15mg/kg/day as a single dose or divided every 12 hours.
- Children under 10 years: Use a suitable alternative dosage form.
For Trichomonas infection:
- Adults and adolescents: 2g as a single dose, or 200mg three times a day for 7 days, or 400mg twice a day for 5-7 days.
- Children under 10 years: 40mg/kg as a single dose, or 15-30mg/kg/day in 2-3 doses for 7 days. Maximum 2g/dose.
For non-specific genital infection in women:
- Women: 400mg twice daily for 7 days, or 2g as a single dose for 1 day.
- Adolescent girls: 400mg twice daily for 5-7 days, or 2g as a single dose.
For amoebiasis:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 400mg-800mg three times a day for 5-10 days.
- Children 7-10 years: 200mg-400mg three times a day for 5-10 days.
- Children 3-7 years: 100mg-200mg four times a day for 5-10 days.
- Children 1-3 years: 100mg-200mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
- Alternatively, 35-50mg/kg/day in 3 doses, not exceeding 2.4g/day.
- Children under 7 years: Use a suitable alternative dosage form.
For giardiasis:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 2g once daily for 3 days, or 400mg three times a day for 5 days, or 500mg twice daily for 7-10 days.
- Children 7-10 years: 1g once daily for 3 days.
- Children 3-7 years: 600mg-800mg once daily for 3 days.
- Children 1-3 years: 500mg once daily for 3 days.
- Alternatively, 15-40mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 doses.
- Children under 7 years: Use a suitable alternative dosage form.
For gum and teeth infections:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 200mg three times daily for 3-7 days.
For infected leg ulcers or pressure sores:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 400mg three times daily for 7 days.
For Helicobacter pylori-related stomach ulcers:
- Follow the doctor’s instructions, typically 1g 24 hours before surgery, then 400mg every 8 hours before the operation.
For surgery prevention:
- Adults: 1g as a single dose 24 hours before surgery, then 400mg every 8 hours.
- Children under 12 years: 20-30mg/kg as a single dose 1-2 hours before surgery.
- Newborns with gestational age less than 40 weeks: 10mg/kg as a single dose before surgery.
- Children under 10 years: Use a suitable alternative dosage form.
Important considerations:
- Elderly or liver disease patients: Follow doctor’s instructions carefully.
How to take: Swallow them whole with a glass of water, either during or after meals. Do not chew the tablets.
Contraindications
Do not take Metronidazole tablets if you:
- Are allergic to metronidazole, nitroimidazoles (e.g., tinidazole), or any of the other ingredients in the medicine. Signs of an allergic reaction may include a rash, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue.
- Are in the first 3 months of pregnancy or are breastfeeding.
Special Precautions
Before taking Metronidazole tablets, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse if you:
- Have kidney disease, especially if you need dialysis treatments.
- Have a history of liver disease.
- Have epilepsy or have had seizures.
- Have any nervous system disorders.
- Have been exposed to sexually transmitted diseases.
Important warnings:
- Liver toxicity: Severe liver issues, including acute liver failure and fatalities, have been reported in patients with Cockayne syndrome using metronidazole. If you have Cockayne syndrome, your doctor should closely monitor your liver function during and after treatment.
Stop taking Metronidazole and seek immediate medical help if you experience:
- Stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever, malaise, fatigue, dizziness, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, light-colored stools, or itching.
- Serious skin reactions:
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN): These may start as reddish target-like spots or circular patches with central blisters, often accompanied by fever and flu-like symptoms. They can cause ulcers in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, and may lead to widespread skin peeling and life-threatening complications.
- Acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP): A red, scaly rash with bumps and blisters, often with fever, most commonly found in skin folds, trunk, and upper extremities. Serious skin reactions are most likely to occur within one week of starting treatment, often within 48 hours.
If any of these serious reactions occur, stop taking Metronidazole immediately and contact your doctor or seek emergency medical attention.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Metronidazole tablets should not be taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy and are generally not recommended for the rest of pregnancy. If breastfeeding, stop while taking the medication and for 12-24 hours after finishing the course. Always consult your doctor before use.
Driving and Using Machines
Metronidazole tablets may cause drowsiness, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, vision problems, seizures, or hallucinations. Ensure you are not affected before driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that could be dangerous.
Is it safe to take Metronidazole 500mg Tablet with other drugs?
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including over-the-counter or herbal medicines, as they may interact with Metronidazole tablets. This includes:
- Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin)

- Disulfiram (for alcohol addiction)
- Ciclosporin (for organ transplants)
- 5-fluorouracil (for cancer)
- Busulfan (for leukemia)

Ano ang mga epekto ng FLAGEX Metronidazole 500mg Tablet?
