Side Effects
EXEL Cefalexin 250mg common side effects include: disturbances in the digestive system such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort. Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults (15+ years): The usual adult dose is 250 mg every 6 hours. Alternatively, 500 mg may be administered every 12 hours for conditions like streptococcal pharyngitis or mild skin infections. Total daily dosage ranges from 1 g to 4 g, divided into multiple doses.
- Dosage for Kids (1 year & up): The standard daily dosage is 25 to 50 mg per kg of body weight, divided and given every 6 or 8 hours. For middle ear infections (otitis media), 75 to 100 mg per kg per day, divided into 4 doses, may be necessary.
The maximum total daily dosage should not exceed 4 g. For the treatment of beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections, the medication should be taken for at least 10 days.
Contraindications
This product must not be used by individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions to any antibiotic in the cephalosporin class. Patients who have had major allergic reactions to penicillin antibiotics should also avoid its use due to the possibility of cross-reaction.
Special Precautions
- Caution is advised for individuals with a known history of reduced kidney function, as the required dosage may be lower than standard.
- Use with care in people with a history of serious digestive tract conditions, such as inflammation of the colon or severe diarrhea.
- Rare symptoms affecting the central nervous system, including seizures, have been reported; monitor for unusual neurological signs.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
Interactions may occur with some other oral medicines, potentially leading to increased blood levels of the co-administered drug, such as those used for diabetes. Taking it alongside certain other anti-infective agents may also elevate the chance of kidney-related side effects.
