DOXYPERL Doxycycline 100mg is used for the treatment of numerous bacterial infections across various body systems, including those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin structure. It is highly effective against specific rickettsial, chlamydial, and mycoplasmal infections, such as pneumonia, non-gonococcal urethritis, and is also indicated for the management of severe acne and certain sexually transmitted infections. This broad-spectrum activity makes it a suitable option for many susceptible bacterial pathogens.

Side Effects

DOXYPERL Doxycycline 100mg common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea, and loss of appetite. The medication also frequently causes the skin to be highly sensitive to sunlight, which may result in severe sunburn or rash. Serious but rare reactions can involve severe skin issues, inflammation of the esophagus, or increased pressure around the brain, symptoms that require immediate attention.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): 200mg on the first day, usually administered as 100mg every 12 hours, followed by a maintenance dose of 100mg once daily. For severe infections, 100mg may be administered every 12 hours throughout the treatment course. Do not exceed 300mg in 24 hours for most uses.
• Dosage for Adolescents (8+ years, 45 kg or more): The dosage is generally the same as the adult dosage.
• Dosage for Kids (8+ years, under 45 kg): Initial daily dose is 4.4 mg per kg of body weight, divided into 2 doses, followed by a daily dose of 2.2 mg per kg of body weight, taken once or divided into 2 doses.

Not recommended for children under 8 years of age due to potential dental effects. Maximum treatment duration varies based on the type of infection.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in individuals who have known hypersensitivity to this medication or any other antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Use in the later stages of pregnancy may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth and reversible inhibition of bone development in the fetus.

Special Precautions

• Must be taken with adequate fluid while standing or sitting upright to minimize the risk of irritation or ulceration of the esophagus.
• May increase pressure around the brain, which can manifest as headaches or vision changes.
• Should be used with caution in individuals with liver or kidney impairment.
• Avoid direct or excessive exposure to sunlight or UV light due to increased photosensitivity risk.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, may be reduced, requiring alternative protective measures. Absorption can be significantly decreased when taken simultaneously with preparations containing divalent and trivalent cations, such as antacids or iron supplements. It can also increase the effects of blood-thinning medications.
