Indications / Uses

CEPLENEXT Cefalexin 100mg / mL Drops for Baby is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections in infants and children, including those affecting the respiratory tract, middle ear (otitis media), and skin and soft tissues. It is also effective for infections of the bones, joints, urinary tract, and dental infections caused by susceptible organisms. This product is an oral anti-bacterial agent belonging to the cephalosporin class, working by destroying the bacteria's cell walls.

Side Effects

CEPLENEXT Cefalexin 100mg / mL Drops for Baby common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, or abdominal pain. Hypersensitivity reactions are also common, usually manifesting as skin rashes, itching, or hives. More serious, though rare, reactions can include severe skin conditions or a persistent, watery, or bloody diarrhea, which may indicate a serious gut infection. In individuals with reduced kidney function, there is a small risk of central nervous system effects.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Infants and Kids: The usual recommended total daily dosage is 25 to 50 mg per kg of body weight, divided into doses given every 6 or 12 hours.
• Dosage for severe infections or Otitis Media in Kids: The daily dose may be increased up to 75 to 100 mg per kg of body weight, divided into doses given every 6 or 8 hours.

The total daily dosage should not exceed 4 g. The total daily dosage should be adjusted based on the specific infection and the individual's weight. The duration of treatment is typically 7 to 14 days, and for certain strep infections, it must be given for at least 10 days.

Contraindications

The product is not suitable for individuals with a known allergy to anti-bacterial agents of the cephalosporin class. It should be used with extreme caution in those with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin-type anti-bacterial agents, as there is a risk of cross-sensitivity.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Small quantities of the active component are known to be present in human milk. The use of this product during breastfeeding is only recommended when clearly needed.

Special Precautions

• Requires careful consideration for individuals with reduced kidney function, as a lower dose may be necessary.
• Prolonged or repeated use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
• Caution is needed in individuals with a history of digestive problems, especially inflammation of the colon.
• The use of this product can cause a false-positive result in certain tests for glucose in the urine.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

The concurrent use of certain gout medications can lead to higher concentrations of the anti-bacterial agent in the body. Concomitant administration with other agents that can be harmful to the kidneys may increase the risk of adverse renal effects. It may also increase the concentration of an anti-diabetic medication called metformin.

How should I store it?

The powder for suspension should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. The reconstituted liquid must be kept refrigerated and should be discarded after 14 days.
