BACTREX Cotrimoxazole 200mg / 40mg Suspension is used for treating a wide array of bacterial infections throughout the body. This combination antibiotic is effective against conditions such as acute and chronic infections of the genitourinary tract, including cystitis and pyelonephritis. It is also indicated for respiratory passages infections, including bronchitis and middle ear infections (otitis media), as well as certain gastrointestinal infections and skin or soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Side Effects
BACTREX Cotrimoxazole 200mg / 40mg Suspension common side effects include: gastrointestinal distress such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Other frequent reactions are headaches and various skin rashes, which may occasionally be accompanied by a loss of appetite. While rare, more serious adverse reactions can involve severe skin conditions, blood disorders such as leukopenia or thrombocytopenia, and signs of liver or kidney impairment, which would require immediate discontinuation.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Adults and Adolescents (12+ years): 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls) two times daily.
- Dosage for Kids 5 - 12 years: 5 mL (1 teaspoonful) two times daily.
- Dosage for Kids under 5 years: 2.5 mL (½ teaspoonful) two times daily.
Dosage for infants from 2 months of age is based on body weight, typically about 6-12 mg of the trimethoprim component per kg of body weight per day. Not recommended for infants under 2 months of age. Maximum treatment duration for typical acute infections is 14 days, though some short courses may be 5 days.
Contraindications
Avoid use in individuals with a known severe sensitivity to this class of compounds. This product is not suitable for patients with severe damage to the liver or with severe kidney impairment. It is also contraindicated in those with certain serious blood disorders, such as megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of folic acid, or a history of low platelet count associated with similar medication. It should not be given to infants less than 2 months of age.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
The combination of active ingredients is generally avoided during the entire duration of pregnancy, and is strictly contraindicated near term, as it may pose a risk to the fetus. It is also contraindicated in those who are nursing, as components are excreted in the milk and may cause an adverse reaction in the newborn.
Special Precautions
- Maintain adequate fluid intake throughout the treatment period to help prevent potential crystal formation in the urine.
- Patients should minimize exposure to direct or artificial sunlight and wear protective clothing due to the risk of increased skin sensitivity (photosensitivity).
- Caution is advised for individuals with a history of severe allergies, bronchial asthma, or those with an inherited condition known as G-6-PD deficiency.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
This product may increase the effect of certain blood-thinning agents, which could raise the potential for bruising or bleeding. Caution is also needed when taken with some medications for diabetes or certain arthritis treatments, as the concurrent use may lead to adverse effects.
How should I store it?
Keep the suspension stored at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Ensure the container is tightly closed, and keep it protected from light and moisture.
