Indications / Uses

BETAZAR Betahistine 16mg is used for the management of Ménière's syndrome, a disorder of the inner ear. This condition can present with a combination of symptoms including the sensation of spinning or dizziness (vertigo), ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus), and progressive hearing loss. The active component is thought to function by improving blood flow within the inner ear to help relieve these debilitating symptoms.

Side Effects

BETAZAR Betahistine 16mg common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, indigestion (dyspepsia), and abdominal discomfort. Other frequently reported effects are headache, vomiting, and bloating. Less common but reported effects are hypersensitivity reactions affecting the skin, which may appear as rashes, itching (pruritus), and hives (urticaria). Taking the tablets with food can often help reduce the chance of experiencing stomach issues.

Directions and Dosage

• Adults (18+ years): Initial dosage is 8 mg to 16 mg three times daily.
• The usual maintenance dosage ranges from 24 mg to 48 mg daily, which should be given in 2 or 3 divided doses.
• Do not exceed a maximum daily dosage of 48 mg.

Not recommended for individuals below 18 years of age. Improvement may not be noticeable until after a couple of weeks of treatment.

Contraindications

Do not use if you have a known oversensitivity to the active substance or any other components in the tablet. It should not be used by those with a rare tumor of the adrenal gland. It is also not suitable for patients with a current or previous history of stomach or intestinal ulcers.

Special Precautions

• Use with caution in individuals who experience episodes of bronchial asthma.
• Special monitoring is advised for individuals with persistently low blood pressure.
• Take care if there is a history of skin rashes, hives, or allergic rhinitis, as the symptoms may become worse.
• Taking the tablet with or after food may help to reduce the incidence of stomach irritation.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Caution is advised when used alongside medications that are used for depression or Parkinson’s disease, such as MAO inhibitors. Due to the nature of the active ingredient, it may also theoretically affect the effectiveness of allergy medications, so concurrent use is generally discouraged.

How should I store it?

Store the tablets in their original packaging away from light and moisture. Keep the storage temperature below 30°C.
